Blind and confused hen.

I think I'll miss my "Just Hatched" status when it changes. I think it matches my avatar.

Just curious. At how many posts does the status change and whats next after "Just Hatched"?

I really would like to keep the "Just Hatched" title...... regardless of how many posts I have. ..............ppppppppp please?

Hi all. I hope you are all good!

I'm sorry I have not been online for a while. Been really busy recently. I'm afraid our Jessica seems to be near death. She was doing really well for a good while. Now she cant stand up and just lies down and looks she has trouble keeping her head aloft for long periods of time. I think she is completely blind now and has not been eating. she falls onto her side sometimes then really freaks out. then its like allher energy has gone and just looks really really tired.

Sorry for the bad discription but i'm really wanting to know if I should shoot her with my .22 or wring her neck.

Thanks in advance.

Everway -

I have read through the whole thread and I just wanted to say I am so sorry to hear that Jessica has deteriorated.

I have a chicken she is almost identical in looks, she has had problems which some on here suggested she may have eaten something toxic resulting in blindness. She was stumbling around and losing her balance - in fact she didn't walk for a few days, I massaged her legs and put her on antibiotics in the hope of some improvement - it has taken weeks of care for her - she is now walking and she appears to have some vision now - she finds her food and water and appears to be happy and healthy despite her vision problem.

You have done so much for her....if you do have to euthanase please don't shoot her - cut her head off by all means but a shot may not result in a quick death.

Bet it's very cold now in Cumbria........ you'll probably have a white Christmas there!

I hope that Jessica improves for you...... miracles can happen!

p.s. Love your Avatar ( or as we English would say... photograph - it took me ages to find out what an Avatar was..... dooohhhh! )

Thanks for the reply Suzie.

She seems so very weak. Her bottom is very messy also. She hardly moves at all. I think all i have done for her is all i can do.

She's been wormed and had loads of good minerals and a variety of foods. With her being in our house now the speed of her deteriation has been much more noticable.

The reason I mentioned shooting was because she wont even know a gun is pointing at her head and therefore a near 'point blank' shot to the brain would not be difficult to administer.

Failing that then its either wait till the morning and go to the vets which is a good 15 mins away and may cause her more stress or just sharpen my axe

Thanks again.

I'm sorry to say, I would go with the axe.
You tried your best, alot better than most would have done.
Good luck with your decision.

Thanks stoopid. I think It will have to be that way. Never done it before so a lil bit nervous. the poor girl seems so bad that if i put her on a block of wood i think she would just lie there and not move anyway.

To cull after all this hard work and effort (nevermind the heartache) is tough. Remove her head with a quick slice of a sharp (real Sharp) knife and it will be over in an instant. I am certain her burial spot will be well adorned. I did not expect tis thread to end in such a way.... Sad, but you gotta say she had a great caregiver....

OK then. thanks peterlund. Thanks to y'all!!!!! I'm going to have to do it I'm afraid. Axe it is then... it is very sharp. As I said... I have not done this before and am a lil anxious. I just hope I can get it done fast and accurately.

OMG that was quite emotional! Or should I say 'surreal' or Woe! OMG or even a lil bit Traumatic. I'm glad it went ok. First chop did the job but another two made sure. I used a cleaver. I thought that a cleaver would be better as it has a longer blade therefore less chance of 'missing'. She hardly knew a thing (or at least i hope not). I held her body and felt the muscle spasms but they were very weak. 2-3 seconds till death 10 seconds or less to no spasms whatsoever. I'm sorry if I have been a little too graphic but it may just help others who have not done this before to understand what might or might not happen. Next time I will be using a heavier cleaver though. I hope it was not to painful for her. RIP Jessica.

Thanks to all who have posted and maybe are still to post. I think I'm going to lay down now for a few minutes. Thanks again.
