PLEASE HELP ME! I HAVE SCOURED THE INTERNET AND CAN'T SEEM TO FIND MY ANSWER!!
I am in Arizona and we are new chicken owners!! On Tuesday 7/10/12 - we found one of our chickens (She's about 3 months old) plopped on the ground between two cinder blocks barely moving. We couldn't find any signs of trauma or any other symptoms other than lethargic, unable to stand up and her eyes were closed and she would not open them for nothing!! She was literally on deaths door. We figured she was suffering from heat stress& dehydration. The other chickens are all fine - so I started to wonder if she had injured her eyes and was keeping them shut because they hurt and therefore - unable to find water or feeder. We brought her into air conditioned house and gave her water and watched her over night. By morning she was standing and cooled off and drinking if we put her beak into a bowl of water. Today is Friday (day 4) and this morning I noticed there were 2 little drops of watery blood on her food dish and above her right eye... it looked to me like she had scratched the skin right above her eye - - almost like a paper cut. She scratches her head/eye from time to time and perhaps she cut it that way? I dripped some saline over her eyes and dabbed with soft cloth. A couple minutes later she opened her eye half way and then shut it again. At that point I saw a little bit of fluid form along the crease of her eyelid. She seems to be feeling fine BUT SHE KEEPS HER EYES CLOSED so it's like having a blind chicken! I made her a new home in a large dog crate and I go in every few hours and get her off the perch and put her in front of her food and water dishes. When she seems satisfied I put her back on her perch or I let her stand on the floor of the cage. After she eats - she preens herself a little bit and then sits for a bit and then tucks her head into her wings and goes to sleep.
Has anyone ever heard of a chicken with an eye infection only? no other symptoms? No sneezing, raspy breathing etc.
I will take care of her as long as necessary and if she never opens her eyes I will try and find a some one who is willing to keep a blind chicken in their home. She wont survive in the coop with our 13 other chicks if she can't see.

Thank you in advance for any ideas or suggestions.

H.E.L.P. PLEASE! I am new to this sight... still hoping someone will read my post and give me some ideas... ANYTHING?? I noticed just now that after she scratched one of her eyes it got a little watery and red and when I picked her up - she opened her eye half way!! then closed it again. It had an obvious odor. Must have a little infection going on in her eye... but otherwise seems totally normal. Is there an ointment or oral medicine I should try? AGAIN.. I am new to chicken raising. My husband actually started this whole back yard chicken coop thing.. but I am the hopeless softy who will nurse any ill chicken to health if I can!

I have a link to a diagnostic page: http://happyhenhouse.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=sickly&action=display&thread=9966#ixzz20dxamWBM

Hi, I just saw your post. It's difficult to know exactly what it might be. If she has bloody poop it's most likely Coccidosis, so for that you can use Sulmet - also found at Tractor Supply (it's a liquid coccidiostat to mix with water). If she's not too far gone that will perk her up in about 4 hours or so. Sulmet treats some types of things as well as Cocci. It can damage the liver which is why I always recommend other things first unless you are SURE it's Coccidosis. If it doesn't look like Cocci you may want to start her on water soluble antibiotics, like "Duramyacin". You can usually find it in powder form at Tractor Supply if you have one in your area. At least while you're researching the diagnosis it's a start. If that doesn't work you may need to give her a shot with Tylan 50 which is a strong broad-spectrum antibiotic, but I don't like to go that route until I've tried the first Water-Soluable one first.

A lot of things can cause chickens to close their eyes, especially if they're not feeling good.

I hope she pulls through - it sounds like you're doing the right things for her.

Thank you for your post. Besides her eyes being closed - - there are no other abnormal symptoms that I can find. So very odd.

BLIND CHICKEN MYSTERY UPDATE: I have had Beep Beep in my house for 6 days now and have not seen anything abnormal about her poop, her beak, nostrils, skin, or how she behaves. She has opened her eyes half way only a few times and when she does - there is an odor. All I can surmise is that she injured one or both of her eyes and there is an infection. I started using Neosporin on her eyes yesterday. Today her eyelids look better. (I am sure that 'eyelids' is probably not the proper word.)

I guess I will just continue to apply the ointment and see what happens.

I hope to find a nice home for her here in AZ where she can be kept indoors with another sweet docile chicken .... if she never opens her eyes. She'd be the perfect therapy chicken as she is so calm and sweet!!

I pray that BeepBeeps eyes will get better...:fl :hugs Keep up the good work. If you can get opthamolic antibiotic ointment that would be even better.

And to BigEcarter....BLESS YOU for finding that unbelievable link!!! WOW! :yesss:
