On June 26th I got home late from work to find my Cochin hen still outside in the rain. Upon it getting her in I discovered she had been attacked by something. I also discovered one of my silkie hens gone. Found some of her feathers scattered around near the gate the next morning. My poor girl. I feel awful. First time in 5 years anything like this has happened. I am thinking it was a skunk as I saw one the next night prowling around the yard. Back to my Cochin. She has one eye that has been totally closed. Her other eye is open but I think she has no sight. I have been applying terramyacin ointment daily to both. She also had a wound under one of her wings that I have been treating with vetricyn spray. She has been separated from the flock because they won’t stop pecking her if I try to put her with them. She has food and water but I don’t believe she is accessing either. I take her out and manually get her to eat and drink 2-3 times a day. The last few days she won’t drink the water but she does eat fairly well. I have been feeding her a mixture of cooked quinoa, scrambled or hard boiled egg, and canned cat food. Do you think her sight may return or is it hopeless? I don’t want her to suffer or slowly starve. She did lay an egg the next morning after the attack but none since. I told my husband he may have to cull. I can’t do it... but I want to give her a fair chance as she seems to have the will to live.

Skunks are incredibly shy and non-aggressive animals and while they can go after smaller chickens, they typically will focus on one. Additionally, if it was a skunk attack, you'd find a carcass, not feathers -- skunks typically will eat where they kill, and won't drag off a meal to eat elsewhere, unlike foxes for example.

As for her sight, does she react if you bring your finger to her eye? Typically a bird will either 1) pull away from the finger, 2) close their eye as the finger gets closer, or 3) peck the finger.

Thank you for the reply. No she does not respond at all to my finger or a flashlight.

Does her eye still dilate/constrict?

Her eye doesn't seem to have any signs of trauma, and the wounds on her comb make me think that she was smacked in the head or her head was grabbed by a predator.

If her eye is constantly dilated, I'd give her some time -- it's entirely possible that she has a concussion and only time will tell.

I'd be careful with her shut eye -- if it's damaged, its best chance of healing is to be left alone.
