Just noticed that my cockerel has blisters with pus on his comb. I have never seen this before. He is eating and drinking well. Acts normal. Anyone had this before? I am out with my chickens every day and I pick this chicken up on a daily basis and why have I just now noticed it? I swear it must have happened overnight, but by the looks of it, it seems like it would have been ongoing for at least a few days.

Thoughts????

Do they look black in color? I wonder if it could be fowl pox.....a form of chicken pox that comes from mosquitos. They usually do get over that on their own. I think it can be fatal, but that is very rare.......

You could apply a topical ointment that would make the blisters feel better and heal more quickly, I would think.......

Some blisters are black and some have pus. I read that fowl pox had raised wart like bumps and these are flat. I will google fowl pox to see if that is it. I'm scared!!

Okay, I realize now after getting pictures that this has to be fowl pox. According to everything I have read, I just have to wait until it runs it's course.

Yup, that's fowl pox. You can put some iodine on the nodules/yellow scabs, it'll help dry them. Scabs that fall off are infective. Fowl pox is a virus as you have already read, antibiotics wont do any good neither...unless there's a secondary bacterial infection. It is mainly mosquito borne. It should clear up in about 3-4 weeks, more or less. He'll be immune to fowl pox after this episode.

I would also check his skin under his feathers for similar lesions, he may have been noshing on your local fire ant colony. Your roosters lesions look similar to mine when he had a go at the ants, he had already had fowl pox at the time, but he also had some bites on surrounding skin.

I left mine in with the rest. I had hoped they would all get it and be done with it. Don't think it worked but will soon see. Mosquitos are very lively this year. THey only get it once.
