Blizzard conditions tonight and tomorrow..........NOOoooooooo!

It was accurate!
We have had freezing rain for 3 days statewide in Alaska.
This has not happened since 1936? I believe.

I'm jealous of all you getting snow!!! Not that I want subzero temps and blizzard like conditions that knock out the power, but at least a little snow would be nice. We are getting the cold temps, low 20's, but no moisture. It is very, very dry out. Seems everyone around me is getting, or got, at least a little snow. And we have the perfect property for sledding too.

We haven't had a sufficient amount of snow(like at least a few inches) for a long time now. I know we didn't get anything of significance last year. I'm pretty worried about my chickens too, especially since I have one that just got over a kidney infection. So far, I have not put any supplemental heat out. They have a 75 watt light out there, but that is more for egg production. Goes on at 5am, shuts off at 9am. Last year I had a much smaller coop, with only 4 chickens in it, and I had a heat lamp in there to keep the water from freezing. I could tell there was moisture in the coop, because the shavings would freeze like a rock, whereever the poop hit them. I had a chicken get ill during this time, not sure if it was related or not. This time around, the shavings are staying nice and fluffy. Of course, I have a poop board so that helps. Oh well, still early in the season, maybe we will get lucky and get alot of snow. No power would really stink though, and that is always a possibility out here, cause we have a lot of huge Doug firs that are waiting to drop a huge limb on a power line. We are on a well, too. So no power means no water. Not to mention, I have 1 month old chicks in the brooder right now. Got a generator, so I guess that's not a huge deal. No water sure does stink though. Last year, our well pump froze. That was no fun.

Ok. This is getting to be a bit much for our "temperate" climate. Two years ago, we had 24 inches of snow on the ground which hasn't happened in eons. Last year, we had 7 and 8 degree days back to back, again, had not happened in eons. This year, we have snow in November and freezing rain on the way tomorrow night.

What's up with the weather here in the Portland area?

I am interested in making some type of huddle box for my girls over their roost. (the coop is insulated, but it would just me me FEEL better!) Would it trap in the moisture though while they sleep? I have 11 hens who all huddle together on their roost at night.

The warmer the air, the more moisture it can hold. I know; creates a bit of a dilemma, doesn't it

I will tell you one thing about moisture that is very good to know. Cold and wet (32deg wet +) temps kill animals, both big and small. You are MUCH better of with freezing temps (32deg frozen and below). Once the ambient air freezes, the moisture falls out of the air. Thus; the air now acts as an insulator, rather than a conductor... It is a strange phenomenon to be outside when this happens; even though it is technically getting colder, the felt change to the body is warmer!...
I say this to let you know that your chickens are safer in a dry 25deg condition, as opposed to a wet 35deg condition...

I'm in Coeur d' ALENE Id. Same storm all are dealing with in the NW.I put a 150 watt bulb in the brooder lamp 2 days ago.The coop is insulated, but the water froze just the same.Made a huddlebox from a 18 gal tote. But now they lay eggs in it,and don't use it for sleeping.I only have 3 gals. no eggs last 2 days.I have been leaving the light on 24/7 to keep the chill down, maybe thats why no eggs.this is going to be one wicked winter.

Everyone's going to laugh....the newscasters here have gone nuts over our "coldsnap". That's all anyone talked about today here in California. It got down to 32 and it went up to 56! I'll bet you are all laughing at the temps......

My chickens have no idea they have it so good

That sucks, but hopefully some your eggs could still be saved in the bator providing it was in the house and they didn't freeze. I've had eggs down to room temp in the middle of incubation go on to hatch.

I think the chickens are getting cabin fever.. Almost all of them ventured out today.. Most stayed by the coop door, but a couple of them followed me around begging for their warm water and food...

Now we have to prepare for all the mud that is going to be a result of the snow. UGH
