Blizzard Tonight, worried about my Chickens.

I agree.Mine have done great in the cold and sometimes my coops have been in the process of being remodeled,as they are now.I don't worry about the cold,But I did loose a hen in the heat.I am making it so my chickens can get under the coops for relief from the heat.Believe it or not they will get out of the warm coop in the winter and get under it where it is actually colder.

Aww :( sad to hear about the hen with the heat. I haven't lost one to heat yet but when they were free ranging one flew over into the dog pen

and lost her. Haven't lost any since they've been in the large coop and run. I've notice that my chickens will go into the coop when the wind picks up then after they come back out.

I'm planning on raising Aussies, too. I'm in Central Ark and right now I'm listening to sleet hit my window. I was considering insulating my coop when I buid it. With high summer humidity is this a bad idea if I have lots of windows?
I just saw your post. Umm I'm not an expert on the coop insulation thing. I don't see a problem with it as long as there's good ventilation though. Might be good to ask someone more knowledgeable though. Central ark? Not to far from me :) lol good luck with the aussies, they're great birds!

BOSS? And i'm very glad my chickens are good in the cold but does that really go for most breeds? What about the silkies?

They just look so small and dainty. It's a constant learning experience for me.
About the silkies.... No not good in the cold at all. There are other breeds that do not do well in the extremes either. Cochins can have trouble in high heat since they have so many feathers and silkies in the cold for the opposite reason.
In years gone by I lost a Japanese black tail hen to the cold. She was being herself (always broody) and did not stay on the roost when I put her up there. Poor little thing died on the nest with no eggs in it.
I chose my current birds based largely on the cold heartiness of the breeds.
