I just noticed blood drops in the brooder- small drops, not profuse bleeding. Took me a bit to find which chick it was coming from. Found small round open area on the head, right at the edge of the comb(hope that is correct anatomy). Pearl - 5 week old Amber Sex-Link- is not dropping blood, and the others are not picking on her. Wonder if she accidently got pecked during the feeding frenzy ? Is there anything I need to do for her? Any advice?

Newbie with first chicken injury and worried.

Probably a peck wound. I would keep a close watch because the others will home in on it and peck at it more. If it is not bleeding and just a small red dot, I would leave it alone, put the brooder in a dimly lit area, use a red light whenever you need light at all, and let it heal. Check often for more pecking. If that happens, you will need to remove or screen off the injured chick until it heals. The red light should do a pretty good job of disguising a very small wound.

If it is still bleeding, you need to stop the bleeding before doing the above. Use a styptic pencil or dab on a small bit of styptic powder with the end of a Q-tip. If you don't have that, some say you can use flour or cornstarch. I've tried neither.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks UGCM -- will be picking up a red light tomorrow. All is well and all are sleeping with no pecking. Think it must have been a wild peck during feeding as there has been no pecking or picking of any kind (knock on wood!). Do have the styptic as have 6 dogs, so that will work if needed. Thanks for the assistance!

Update-- Pearl is just fine - there has been no further bleeding and zero pecking. We moved them out to their new coop yesterday, so they have much more room and a new feeder - much larger so perhaps no more accidental pecking. Thanks for the help.
