Hello,

One of my 9 month old buff orpingtons layed and egg the other day and it had blood in it! The shell was normal, no cracks or blood, but the inside was pretty bloody... another egg we had a week ago had a small bloodyish chunk in it too. It kinda looked like an artery or something but I dont think it was one. Help please?

Thanks

Its just from a ruptured blood vessel when the egg was forming. I see one every now and again. Freaked me out the first time too! But your hen is just fine.

I had a hen who laid those kinds of eggs regularly, then after 6 months stopped laying altogether. I would try to identify her particular eggs, and check them often to see if she keeps doing it. There are some many little problems that can occur with the egg laying system. Those eggs are safe to eat, but a bit unappetizing, LOL. I tend to serve those back to the chickens scrambled and chopped. Here are some good articles to read:

Harmless usually. Happens to everyone a few times at leasy.

Safe to eat, but some don't.

Thanks for the help!

She layed another one today but with less blood... I hope it doesn't become a regular thing!

Thanks
