Hi,

My Indian runner started laying 11 days ago, and there has been an egg everyday. We slowly collect the eggs to eat during the weekend. The first half had no issues.

Today I picked up her egg and went to cook with it and saw his strange blood in her egg. I will crack the other eggs tomorrow to check is this is a one off or happened in the other 4 eggs.

Should I be concerned? I read that it could be normal with young ducks who started laying. I have a drake, can this be something internally?

Yuck, that does happen. I've never had one with blood that looks like that but we've all had some weird icky things in eggs and it's usually not something that happens often. Sometimes you'll probably get a weird looking soft shelled egg too or even an egg with no shell!

If I'm cooking with my duck eggs I always crack the egg into a clear custard dish first so I can check for things like that. Also, if you take a small flashlight and tape a toilet roll thing on the end of it you can candle your eggs and most of the time you can see something going on that shouldn't be.

Wow!

It surprised me, glad to hear that other encountered similar weird things. I candled he other eggs and didn't see anything out of ordinary.

That is crazy!!! Ha! And fascinating as well.
yes and the year I found an egg out in the run with no shell around it was a real head-scratcher for me too. I contacted Metzers about that because I hadn't found BYC yet. They were actually very helpful and got back with me right away to ease my mind. I couldn't imagine how the shell disappeared and the egg looking so perfect just like you just cracked in into a frying pan!
