Blood in faeces

Casportpony has good information in her threads about worming. I think she recommends using products with praziquantel, such as Zimectrin Gold horse paste and Equimax. It is always best to get a fecal sample checked by a vet for different worms.

I did search her name, there's 150 pages of threads so I'll have to look on the weekend when I have more time. Unless you know which threads?

I heard back from the vet this morning, he said I can put droppings from a few of my chickens in to one container or just do one bird for the same price. The test is cheap but I can't afford to test all 8 of my chickens individually. I said I was going to try getting Flubenvet but they already have it and to use something else depending on what they find.

Should I test a few of my chickens in one sample or just the two new bantams? And what's the best way to collect droppings?

Hope this thread from @casportpony helps, lots of good info in there

To collect I just use a food bag, hand in bag to pick it up, turn inside out and tie up.

Thank you so much! That tapeworm video looks exactly like what I saw yesterday and good information.

I'm just hoping they'll be okay until Tuesday

Google "Equi-Tape", it's a praziquantel paste for horses that's sold in the UK that will treat tapeworms. I need to google it again and calculate the dose for you.

Equimax would be the cheapest one for you but if you buy it over the counter don't tell them you are going worm chickens with it. They will likely not sell you it if they know that.

That would be my second choice.

Equimax dose for a chicken is 0.03 ml per pound

From left to right:
Small = 0.1 ml
Medium = 0.25 ml
Large = 0.5 ml
The blob next to the grain of rice is 0.025 ml

Does that help ?

When you say "Equimax dose for a chicken is 0.03 ml per pound" do you mean 0.030ml? So a tiny bit more than the 0.025ml dose?

Does anyone know how long cocci takes to become fatal? I've looked at pictures of feces and it looks similar to what I'm seeing from one of those bantams and the vet mentioned it because of the blood. If I order online now it will take a while to get here because of the weekend and bank holiday on Monday.

@Eggcessive when you say cut egg do you mean cut up hard boiled egg? Could I do scramble in a non stick pan with no oil?

Yes, a tiny more than 0.025 ml. Do you have a food scale? If so, it would be best to weigh each bird. Here is the formulas for calculating the dose. This formula works for this one medication, nothing else. Weight of bird in pounds, divide by 2.2, times 10, divide by 140.3 = amount in ml to give. I can explain what the numbers means if you're interested.

I do but 3 of my birds won't let me touch them and panic when I do so I have no idea how I will weigh them. I'm not great with mathematics but I'll save the formula and I'll try and follow your explanation. How are you measuring your doses?

After a trip to the vet today it's not looking good for the bantam with the dirty vent. I bathed her yesterday, applied some canesten cream and for the next 3 hours she strained and screamed. The vet said she felt warm, her abdomen felt hard and she was in pain. They put her on a xray plate and said it looks like she has pieces of eggshell inside her and might have egg Peritonitis. She offered antibiots or to put her to sleep so I'm going to try her on the antibiotics and hopefully she pulls through. She seems better again today, at the moment she's dust bathing. She stopped straining last night and hasn't done it since but I'm still worried about her
