I think what you mean is that chickens like a dark, private place to lay their eggs. Darkness can actually inhibit laying, which is why some people use artificial light to encourage mating during the shorter days of the year - when we have less hours of daylight.

Then you are right. To stop a hen from laying eggs, she would need to be in total darkness for 16 out of 24 hours daily. It can be hard to accomplish this.
