Blood ring.... ::::Crying::::

Oh, I hope you find a way to forgive yourself and your husband right away! I cracked a viable egg in the sink and then, when I saw it was viable, actually yelled, "aaaah, there was a chick in there!" within earshot of my kids. So I got to feel like a rotten excuse for a mom and a horrible caretaker of chickens, all in one act.

I have a egg with a blood ring in it too. I was just about to crack it when I saw the baby move. He must have realized "OH SNAP, she thinks I'm dead!"

Hmm I threw out 3 blood rings last night... that sux. I didnt crack them but took them out of the bator, they are sitting on my shelf by the garbage.. do I dare crack them or just toss them and keep believing they were blood rings?

A ring around an embryo and a blood ring are pretty distinct after you see one of each. If the ring is round and along the edges and is kind of light, it's likely a good embryo. If it looks like someone took a red sharpie and drew a stripe around the center of the egg in a single deep dark line, that's a blood ring. It takes time and experience. I usually tell first timers to not open or toss anything till day 14. By then a blood ring will be any ring, and a live egg will have a dark mass. Don't worry, we all make mistakes and learn from them.

To candle effectively:

1) If you can do this with your candler, great! You have enough power to even see through deep brown and green eggs! It really doesn't have to be quite that bright, but a directly focused light with lots of throw is the best.
(That's my hand in there)

Blood ring on day 6. Note there are no veins or webing, just a solid red line.:

Once my mom caught a guppy floating upside down. She called me and my sister into the bathroom for a burial at sea.

Mom flushed.

The dang fish started swimming.

"Mommy!!! the Fishy!! the Fishy!!!

She's horrified, watching the fish swim fruitlessly against the swirley tide that's sending her to her next home in the sewers of Hampton, Virginia.

We're wailing that the fish wasn't gone yet.

These things happen.
