I have a bantam hen that has laid 2 blood smeared eggs in the last couple of days. Should I be concerned? She has been laying for 5 months and we sometimes get a little poop on the egg, but this is the first time I have seen blood. What's going on?

It happens often--this is one of those things you see when you have chickens that you never see when you buy eggs. Apparently the process of moving the egg out the vent can cause a tear which smears some blood on the eggshell but I've never seen any problems arise from it. Some hens seem to be bothered more by it than others so it may be a structural problem.

Thank you so much! Her eggs are no bigger than usual, so I am hoping it is temporary. She seems fine otherwise.

Every once in a while I will get those from my ducks. Usually after someone took some time off for a molt.
