Bloody Backside

I woke up this morning and one of my chickens that have lived together for 2 years had a bloody and plucked backside. It looks awful. the coop was secure and my guess is one of the other birds did this. Why all of a sudden and what can I do to help her?

Can you post pictures?
Clean the bloody ones up with some warm water.
Applying blu note will help hid the blood so they don't continue to peck each other.

You may need to remove the injured ones for a while.
How many do you have total and in what size coop?

What do you feed them?

Hi and welcome to BYC - sorry that it is not under better circumstances that you join us.

First off, I'd suggest washing the affected area with a saline solution and possibly consider applying some anti-septic liquid (e.g. iodine) to the affected area. Separate the victim immediately, as the sign of blood will only encourage further pecking.

There are just 3 in this coop and it is a big coop. They have been together for almost 2 years. But it is definitely one of the other birds. I have separated her and am going to clean her up. Thank y'all!
What is the best antiseptic for chickens, and what is blu note? I looked it up but found nothing.

Hi and welcome to BYC Since kiki and pork pie gave what to do, I'll try to answer why... Often, it starts as accidental... bug on the tail, food or perceived food. Once chickens see blood, they go after it with vengeance... I've seen one small blood spot, lead to all the girls pecking at the tail of another. Blu-kote helps hide the blood.

Also keep her separated and indoors if possible. Wounds attract flies and the resulting maggots will be much more grief and suffering than the original wound.
