I know it wasn't looking good, but I was hopeful.

I'm going to have nightmares tonight about infection running rampent in the rest of the flock tonight.

I've been looking like a hawk for any more watery poo, and so far nothing like what I saw yesterday.

Antibiotics are in the waterer and have been since 4 pm for the rest of the girls.
If I lose this flock, it's gonna kill me.

She and the rest are a very spoiled bunch. They are my chicken prozac and in the last 3 weeks, the family has gotten attached very quickly.

So much for culling, I can't stop crying!!

So sorry for your loss, I lost my favorite hen to a predator last year so I know how you feel. I still miss my Cleo and its been a year now, she would come when called and let me cuddle her. She was my first chicken I caught a bug for. It hurts like heck but the pain does fade and the happy memories remain. Hugs for your family

Thank you Turtle.

I'm not new to loss but this one does hurt more than I thought it would, I just wish that we'd gotten more time with her, she was getting so sweet natured.

I had been wondering how she was doing, and I'm very sorry you lost her. To be honest she looked like she was leaving, but sometimes it's important to know we tried. I know you love your flock very much and I think you have responded in a most impressive way.

Take care, please.

Thank you Lynne.

We're still not sure what happened exactly but dh had an idea. Since it's spring, the snakes are starting to come back out. We have a 1/2 acre pond and have seen cottonmouths and water moccasins out there and in part of the front yard.

Is it possible that she was bitten by a snake? It wouldn't have to be a large one, and would explain the bleeding, congestion, and lethargy, plus the rapidity that she declined. (Less than 12 hrs. total) She's already buried so there's no way to check for bite marks, but it makes a lot of sense to me at least that it could be possible..

The rest of the flock are fine today, no loose poo's, eating, drinking and laying are fine.
