One of our hens laid a bloody egg today. I checked her vent, and everything looks normal. Why does this happen? Do I need to be worried?

is the egg overly large? occasionally hens (and more often pullets) will lay an egg that's too big for them and tear the area around thier vents. i don't usually bother worrying about a little blood like that, it heals quickly enough by itself. if you're worried you can check your hens vent areas, but it's unlikely you'll find anything.
