i never would have thought i'd love the little guys so much, so hang in there.

you can get sulment from smith game and poultry supply. It come in a large bottle and it last a long time. If you have already treated them its still worth having around for emergencies.

Unfortunately we don't have one of those stores around here and I still have not heard from the avian vet, who I have called AGAIN today.

UPDATE for Monday:

Birds look great..... no one is lagging or looking funky, but I still saw new blood in the poo in the coop from overnight.
I added the electrolytes to the medicated water. I am still giving them the terramyacin since it's all I have.
I am so annoyed that I can't do anything beyond this.
Wish the vet would call.

Ok, so the vet just called and he is like 125 years old and thinks that I should wait before I do anything, and leave them on the terramycin. He told me to wait 7-10 days and if it hasn't cleared up he would test a stool sample. :| I asked how long it would take for it to run it's way through my hens and kill them........... he didn't seem concerned. I am so unimpresses. I need to find a TSC NOW!!!

Excellent article, Speckeld Hen. Thank you.

We've never had this problem so far but I'm sure our turn wil come. Esp with the torrential rains we've been having.

Thanks!

At this point I feel like I am blogging, but for anyone that is still reading, I got in touch with our family vet who apparently does do avian stuff.
He actually told me to use medicated chick starter to treat the birds. I guess it makes sense, and it is way easier for me to get that, so we did.
I am stumped anyhow. I went to let the birds out this morning, and all the fresh poo is totally clean and the birds are lively and happy.
Maybe it isn't cocci, but whatever it was sure had me scared for a while.
Thanks everyone for your input.

It could be that they had coccidiosis, but are recovering. In many instances birds get a touch of it and recover ~ but remember, once there is blood there has been intestinal damage. Not something unconquerable, but take note as it can take its toll on a bird's health in the long run.

It's a good idea for chicken owners to order a few essential drugs (like something for coccidiosis, and one or three general antibiotics) and keep them in a medicine kit so they are handy when needed.

The best advice I would give to anyone regarding coccidiosis is to keep your flock as healthy as possible: fresh air and sunshine, lots of exercise, keep things dry and clean, use quality feed, wash and refill waterers regularly. Offer fresh non-citrus fruits and vegetables as treats. Use vitamins, electrolytes, and probiotics if you are so inclined (I am). The best defense any creature has against illness is a naturally-strong immune system.

And if all else fails ~ use good drugs.

In all seriousness, though, please keep us posted on how things work out with your chickens. Good luck!

He actually told me to use medicated chick starter to treat the birds.

He should know better. Mine get cocci while ON medicated chick starter. The coccidiostat in the starter is a preventative dosage; you need much higher concentration of Amprolium to actually treat cocci.

went to feed store this a.m. & got the sulmet, We cleaned all water containers & filled with treated water, already seeing a big difference in some chicks that were starting to look weak. The even weaker 2 are holding their own & resting comfortable. Thank goodness! I want to thank all of you for your help & advice. It was very very helpful.
