Bloody poop after starting Corid late Sunday night

I picked up 4 chicks, about 4-5 weeks old at a swap meet/show on Saturday. One of them has blood in the poop so I started them on Corid (1/2 tsp powder with a gallon of water) and change the water out twice a day unless they make a big mess.

After the first day on the meds their appetite increased and they look fine. Don't see any nasty bums and they look forward to being fed, are trying to "dust" themselves in the shavings and seem fine. Didn't have one bloody poop on Monday and then yesterday, after changing and cleaning out their tote, there was one nasty poop with blood and then this morning there were several made overnight that had some blood in them.

I am not feeding them any treats yet, just Purina Flock Raiser and added a small amount of chick sized gravel to their shavings (about 1 tbs) scattering it.

I am really concerned about them but with the exception of the blood in the poop they appear fine and healthy and act happy. Any suggestions or is this pretty much par for the course of them getting better. Thanks in advance for the help.

the corid is a excellent choice. I think it's just to be expected. continue with Corid and it should fix them right up. best of luck to you.

Thank you very much. Makes me feel better. I have raised 5 kids and I worry about these little guys like I did about my children. My husband says it's because the kids are grown I need something to mother. :)

I treat with Corid for 5-7 days. I have had to retreat before, a whole other cycle of 5-7 days (two batches of chicks) when the bloody poo came back.

It sounds like you are right on top of the situation.

For future reference (later on after they are finished with treatment, you might see what appear to be bloody poos but might be shed intestinal linings that are mushier and occur occasionally- you can look at the poo page to determine later on if you see one, if that is what it is. They are considered normal. But you would not be seeing them all over the place, nor every time a chicken poos. So the trick is to decide if a bloody poo is indeed blood, or a shed intestinal lining, if you only see one in the coop and they have previously been well. The bloody poo is abnormal, and the shed lining is normal.
