Bloody tail abcess **GRAPHIC**

FYI:
This is not prolasp....it is on the tail.

Oh, whoops! I thought it was a prolapse! My bad!

Chickens have an oil gland at the end of their tail. They will rub their face/beak there and then spread it through their feathers. It looks like she has a badly clogged oil gland. I would put some warm compresses on her bum 3-4 times a day. It will help open up the tissues and hopefully move the clog. If it can be squeezed slightly without upsetting her, you may be able to get the clog to move but be prepared for a flow of fluid. I'd clean it real well once you think it's mostly empty. The Preparation H would be good at that point to reduce the swelling.

Huh?

What usschicago1 is saying is:

You were chicken sitting for a friend who was on vacation. How come you noticed the problem and your friend who owns the chicken didn't.

Oh hahahaha!
Well, it was just my luck. Don't things always happen when you are watching a friends farm?
Also....It was thickly covered with feathers (I plucked alot off so I could see the area and clean it) and was apparently dry until the roo knocked off the scab and made the area bleed. It looked much worse after I cleaned it and soaked the rest of the scab off. I think that it was just festering under that scab.

Apparently my friend just got this pair of birds, so there is some discussion on how long it may have been like this. Who thinks to part the feathers and look at the tail when you buy a new bird?
Thanks for all the help!! I talked to owner last night and she said it looks 10 times better. I am hoping to go see her this weekend.
