I've got my blr wyandottes picked that I'm going to keep to breed this year with one cockerel That has nice hackle color with almost no brassiness at all. I was wondering though If crossing a rosecomb RIR in with them would help make the red even more red? My hens all have a small amount of brassiness in the necks but other than that are pretty nice.

Two years ago I took a buckeye hen and croosed with a blrw rooster. The result was I got a mahogany hen that had very little change from the buckeye. The second year I took that hen and got a mahogany bird that had some lacing and the tail was blue. I was not going to try and go any farther with this. It was just a experiment. The f2s produced body type was still almost all buckeye with a more wyandotte type comb. I bred these, but kept them at my fathers home, I was low on space. The hens lay very well and are very good sized. Hope this helps. Mike

Well I was hoping the cross would make the red even more red and hopefully get rid of any brassiness. I'm sure body type will be lost but backcrossing and sellective breeding in time I'm hoping would yield good results. From what I understand red had to be introduced into the mix somewhere anyway. I know Jeff Foley has done the cross and I've seen pics of an f2 hen that looks outstanding. The calculator shows blue and black incomplete laced birds for f1 and it seems no matter how I breed the resulting birds it comes up incomplete lacing.
