I go by their leg size, comb size/width, their overall size and they're more rambunctious nature. By ten weeks old you should tell the difference on almost all of them after you have hatched orp babies a time or two. But there will always be that one that you thought would be a pullet.....
I just wanted to add that these orps are so good natured and sweet! I hatched some black copper marans, RIR and some mixed about 2 days before these guys. I had two brooders set up side by side. Whenever I did anything with the marans brooder they just went wild--acted like I was going to murder them! But the orps are completely docile and not wacky at all. It's an amazing difference.
Now they are all in a big brooder together and I think the orps are calming the others down--they don't seem as nutty as they did!
too true. I have bc marans and tuff's orp babies together in a brooder and this morning when I lifted to lid...what flew out as fast as the could...one of the bcm's! But the orp's are quite calm in comparison.
