Straight run chicks, some are male. We have a male Ameraucana, so the male should have blue egg genetics. Purchased from Sandhill Preservation and the bird looks true to an Ameraucana. Wondering what the genetics are (generally) when mated to different females. If mated to a blue egg producing female, then blue eggs will come from the offspring (as expected).

If mated to a brown layer, what will those female offspring produce?

Asking bc I know that generally a male with dark brown egg genetics (such as a BCM) mated to a blue laying female will generally produce female offspring that will likely lay an olive colored egg. So wondering if the reverse mating works the same.

You might not get quite as dark an egg. Several of the brown egg genes are sexlinked, which means only the father can give them to his pullet offspring.

But blue x brown should definitely get green.

OK. That makes sense - I thought that the results might be somewhat different depending on the genetics of the male vs female. So, a green egg can result rather than an olive egg (since the father would be providing the blue egg genes).

It might even still get olive, depending on the quality of the Marans and which brown genetics she possesses.
