Blue eggs

I'm wondering how to breed some hens to lay blue eggs. I have 4 EEs from Ideal 3 hens who lay green eggs and a roo. I also have RIRs, BAs, WLs, BRs, and CMs hens. I also have BR roos ( 3 going to be given away or butched, and one Injured.) So any ideas how to get Blue eggs?

If they are laying green it's because they carry the blue egg gene and the brown tinted, which is actually an overlay of color which makes them appear green. I don't think that you can start with green and add anything other than blue to get to bluer egg color. The best way to get blue eggs is to buy from a breeder who has nice blue eggs

I could be Mistaken but I think if you add the white egg gene then you should get blue But I could be wrong. I have not tried it yet with my ee's.

It's possible that you will get some chicks carrying the blue without the brown... but I think they will most likely be very washed out and pale in color. More tinted than actual color. Hopefully the blue egg gurus will chime in anytime now

Buy a true Ameraucana or a true Araucana rather than EEs. That's the easiest way. I dont think you can get from green back to blue by breeding in any brown or white egg layers.

I used to breed some great blue egg Easter Eggers. What you need for your hens is a great rooster out of a beautiful blue egg from blue egg to blue egg breeding (both parents originated from blue eggs). Search for someone to send you only blue EE or Ameraucana eggs. That will ensure your roo came from a blue egg and is the only guarantee. Match him and some blue egg hens to your green egg group and have fun hatching. The hatchings should be blue and green egg layers. If you really only want blue eggs, you have to keep at it and cull heavy (including all green egg layers).

Thanks guys I'm going to be hatching some in the spring so I can expriment some.

I could be Mistaken but I think if you add the white egg gene then you should get blue But I could be wrong. I have not tried it yet with my ee's

I might try that with my EE roo and 2 White Leghorns. So we might get to see.

Not to discourage you... but I think this came up in a similar post..... and if I'm not mistaken they said that Leghorns actually have a white chalky egg that when bred to blue/green will dull it drastically because of that white coating.

But, that being said.... I think I read somewhere that Legbars (single combed blue egg layers) have an ancestry of Leghorns...... so, it can be done..... but certainly a nice blue egg roo is a good place to start

I've seen some EEs with some killer blue eggs.

My mother has a little girl (ALMOST egg laying age) who is half EE and half Golden Campine (they lay white eggs). If I can remember, when she starts laying I will get some pics and post what her eggs look like. Her mom (the EE) lays beautiful, dark olive green eggs.
