Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

ok i'll ask for advice here... I've got an assortment that should NOT have been hatched together, but on my behalf, I didn't know!!!

can anyone tell dark Cornish (double laced) from blrw chicks under a week old??? they all look identical!

i'll wait and grow them out if I have to, but i'd rather know NOW!

Didn't you accidentally hatch cuckoo Marans and barred rocks in the same batch too? Lol!
yup. that'd be me. thought I learned my lesson, till the dark Cornish started hatching, and I realized what I'd done... but blame Bulldogma. LOL I was hatching them for her, the blrw for me.

so they stick around for a bit till we can tell one from another.

well, typically I find the hatchery Wyandottes to be a bit narrower thru the chest and body, more upright in the stance and the back too long and straight. also the red wasn't anywhere near mahogany.

that may vary by hatchery, but the ones my friend had, tho pretty birds, were not anything i'd consider even remotely close to breeding quality.
is this view useful for evaluating body shape and stance? My not-hatchery roo is almost 6 months old in this shot.
If not, please post something I could compare to. Thanks.

nope they both have yellow legs, rose combs and the funky chipmunk pattern all laced babies get.
Dark cornish should have pea combs and not rose combs, so maybe it won't be too long before you can tell the difference.

Also, I got some more pics of my wyandottes. Can you guys tell me what I should be looking for in type (know the rooster is too brassy now, but was wondering what is off with overall type? I was thinking he looked pretty nice compared to pics of other wyandottes I'd looked up online). I couldn't get very good shots of the hens, so there may not be much you can tell me about them; I do know the youngest one has a crooked peak on her comb which I'm pretty sure she got from being pecked by another hen because it wasn't like that when she was a chick. =/

I like parts of the structure of this male..he is wide. I really like that. If he is young he might even get deeper. (He is not quite deep enough) They can take up to 2 years to mature. I like the color of his legs. He could not be used with your hens. You would end up with all brassy chicks. The one splash is too light to begin with. Cross beak should never be bred..ever. You do not know if it is from an injury or not, cross beak has been bred into many lines of BLRW. Having in your lines will always be in your lines even if you do not see it, it will be there. You might..and that is a strong might. Keep him for another year and see how he looks..if his conformation looks great..get some black hens. My opinion, and that is just an opinion...I would find it would be financially in your best interest to purchase a mature rooster who is breeding quality. It cost the same to feed a bad quality bird as it does a good one. Feeding out your rooster for a year just to see...is expensive. Right now on the rare bird auction is a breeder pair for a reasonable price. They are beautiful. I suggest people to go take a look. There are actually two breeder pair..one is good..one is not. Find the good one. The rooster is gorgeous.

He is 2 years old, so that's probably all the filling out he is going to do. I thought he was pretty wide, but it's helpful to know that wyandottes should be wider than he already is. As to the hen, she actually doesn't have a cross beak. She had her mouth open panting because it was really hot outside yesterday, and I guess I just got her at a bad angle. Thanks for the input!
