Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

Quote: well, i'm getting him back... the friend that got him, I thought I was giving him Swedish Flower Hen chicks... and all but that one were. so I told him when I had more sfh chicks i'd swap him out.

I figure having a selection to pick from as backup roo (or top roo) is a good idea. so i'll be getting jmarie's also (I think?) whenever we can get together.

so other than getting only cockerels (that I know of), i'm really pleased with what i'm seeing out of my blrw trio.

Anyone have any tips on cooling off a chicken coop?
one of my solutions is free ranging. they find their own cool sand wallows to hang out in.

my old coop was metal roof and siding attached to the barn. we laid a soaker hose at the top edge of the roof so water dripped down the roof and side slowly. just that bit of moisture on the roof and one wall was enough to keep it 10 degrees cooler inside. it works better in dry climates than wet ones tho.

My vet suggested an overhead misting system for our area, when the temp exceeds 80°F, as it will cool the air temp 10 to 20 degrees. The principle is that the moisture dissipates in the air so that chickens, food, bedding etc do not get wet.

I'm going to try the "Misty Mate" by Home Depot which is about $25 and can be attached to the top of the run.

Quote: that's why I used the soaker hose... depending on the humidity, the mist may or may not evaporate fast enough. here in VA, it would just land in the bedding before It can evaporate. while putting the soaker on the roof, if any water didn't evaporate first, it just watered the grass next to the wall.
