I will be going to Indy but my birds will be staying home...can't miss it though
But...after the past few months with my daughters new schedule it has become evident I can't continue trying to be a Super Hero and have made the tough decision to sell my BLRW flock.A super hard decision as I absolutely love them but that is why I made this decision.I can't give them the time and dedication I think they deserve. There is no bird that can get me to miss the hours I need to spend at the gym watching my daughter reach her stars..or the endless hours of Girl Scouts I must endure, the Boy Scout outings. In another 10 years the drivers licenses will be issued and I will WANT to stay home and then have more time for my birds.I'm only keeping my Partridge Wyandotte flock for big birds.
So for anyone that is wanting a nice flock I will even deliver them along the route to Indy when I go...1-65 North through KY and IN I will only be in Indy on Sat afternoon and returning on Sunday night..must be back at the gym on Monday.
2 Roosters 1 straight from Jerry's flock this past Spring 1 will be as nice but only 5 months old...1 blue hen we won't say what I paid for her from Jerry last fall she's ugly now though
molting
2 splash hens with nice color not that splash with a hint of color..we don't like those here and last is a black pullet that is close to pol with beautiful deep burgundy. I'm not going to sell them individually though..oh 100% Jerry's breeding all the hens other than the black laced pullet and the one roo were his started birds last fall. They are priced to sell.
My Aviator is the Roo...he was real young in it and getting ready to crow but it shows how nice his color is.
Nando is looking for a wonderful home that accepts handicapped RBLW roosters! See thread below...Let me know if you have just the space for such a special guy. I would love to keep him, but he needs a rooster friendly environment. People wanting to turn him in to freezer fodder need not apply! Thanks for considering him..
I, too, have an absolutely gorgeous BLRW roo that needs a new home. He is too sweet and loving but I have a new Foley roo that is so much typier and have no need for this extra fella. We have put a few of the worse ones in the freezer but there are some that are just too nice to go there and I have way too many roos in my free ranging flock.
Sigh....what to do.....
What opinions does anyone have on this 16 week old pullet? I am just curious as to what I have here since I bought her as an egg on ebay and I never got a straight answer as to what the bloodlines were.
Is it true that most of the time the roos grow slower than the hens? I have 2 that are 4 weeks old and 1 of them is growing so much slower than the other. Here are a few pics of the 2 of them. Sorry for the crappy cell pics but I was to tired to find the camera
I am no Wyandotte expert. I know what I like in Wyandottes and it is usually not a conformation thing with them. I don't show so I can't say what is close to perfect and what is not. I do know that side by side my Foley rooster is a much nicer bird than my Buddy Henry bird but the personality and temperament on both are fantastic!
I read the standard and breed closely to what it says but there are some things I just refuse to get picky about. Leg color is one of those. I have never been one to be concerned since I do not show. That won't break the deal of me keeping a chicken if it is sweet and lays well. Besides, having owned and still own show quality birds has shown me that they are not near the egg producers or as smart of a bird as those that are only pet (breeder) quality. I am sure there are others that may disagree.
Okay, saying that, I love what everyone has shown on here! Gorgeous birds! The color and lacing is fabulous and I have drooled over the photos a lot!
Straight combs happen and I never worry about it. However, I would only keep a rose combed rooster, not a sc. I have and do keep sc hens and breed them. The vast majority of the chicks are rc.
Roos do not grow slower than pullets but they may feather in slower. You probably have a pair there, with the roo being the larger one. I have been fooled before though.
Egg size....the BLRW have not impressed me with their eggs. The SLW lay a bigger egg for me as do my GLW but those are mostly hatchery stock and not used for breeding. My breeder Wyandottes just don't impress me with egg laying or size for the size of bird they are. I have a few hens that are close to the size of my smallest Jersey Giants and still their eggs are much smaller. But the chicks pop out fine and grow well. I never hatch pullet eggs because of the small and weak chicks that are liable to hatch out.
Nava, your roo is breath taking. Some may not care for him but I think he is lovely! I would certainly keep him!
