Looks VERY like a cockerel to me, especially if only 4-5 weeks old
This is a cockerel
The Blue Laced Red Wyandotte has not been accepted into the APA yet. There is no written SOP in the books for the color. All LF Wyandottes have the exact same construction and weight. I have two hens and two pullets. The hens I have lay an average of 200 eggs a year. The Males should weigh 8 1/2 lbs and the females 6 1/2 lbs. That is a pretty bird. I like that the eyes are not black - personal preference. The blues blend in to make for a very colorful bird overall how is the production value of this BLRW breed? Pretty good egger? What weights do they get up to for you? Temperament - nice/friendly? easy to pick up
I don't try to pick up my birds often, so no idea about that, but they are friendly and easy going when free ranging, roosters get along just fine with other roos as well (I've had up to 15 roos ranging on the yard at one time plus girls and youngsters). That is a pretty bird. Kinda weird, I use to love to eat eggs as a kid but, after being a hatch-aholic, it has really turned me off to eating them...I don't try to pick up my birds often, so no idea about that, but they are friendly and easy going when free ranging, roosters get along just fine with other roos as well (I've had up to 15 roos ranging on the yard at one time plus girls and youngsters).
not sure about weights either, I don't eat them or pick them up often, but they are big. as for eggs, when I was getting eggs, they were pretty consistent. then we had broody and moulting, so no eggs right now.
Quote: For a suggestion go to the auction site and look at available BLRW for sale. Be careful there too. They have BLRW adults pictured and send chicks..so read it carefully. I have seen some beautiful stock for sale on that site. I have also seen stuff that should not be called a Wyandotte too. When I can reproduce quality birds on a larger scale that is where I will be posting my birds in pairs. I have two young males right now that might make the cut. I have not counted them as part of the three I have kept for the year. I will reevaluate in March when they are 12 months old. Males take so much longer than females (IMO). So far so good. I worry about chest on males. So many of them have no deep chest. The males I am using do not have that needed deep chest. I have yet to see a male with a chest I love.
as an example..I am working to have this in males at a younger age.
look how deep and round that chest is. This obviously is NOT Wyandotte type. It does not have rear fullness. I am just using this as a visual. I know how to do it in my Orps, I just need to do it in the dotties.
Hmm, now if the SLW ever gets rolling, you are going to have friends over for breakfast or up your appetite. LOL That actually does sound really yum!Tisha, the BLRB we got from you is a laying fool. It's a rare day when she doesn't lay! As for eating eggs, I just ate 3 breakfast burritos.......2 eggs scrambled with jalapenos, black beans, cilantro rolled in corn tortillas with fresh tomatoes. Yummmm!
