Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

Most of the birds you order from a hatchery are not BLRW..they are representatives of the breeds you order. They could be a combination of many different types of birds. I have yet to see the red on any birds from a hatchery. So that means any information about BLRW might not pertain to your bird. Your bird will be unique in its own right. Egg production of an individual hen is dependent on such other factors as age, health, nutrition, space, housing, sanitation, light, humidity, temperature, and where you live. Egg production is only partly influenced by the breed of hen, but Wyandotte's are considered a good laying hens that will lay up to 4 eggs per week on average. This is variable depending on time of year, nutrition, and lighting conditions. My hens start to lay around 7 months of age and lay an average of 5 eggs a week as pullets, than 3-4 eggs a week after a year or two. My BLRW seem to lay less than my other dotties after the first year. I also have BLRW in moult and not laying. It takes a solid 6-8 weeks in some birds to get over moult. My dotties lay all winter...I have a Cuckoo Marans on the other hand who is a poor layer and other Marans who are great layers so it is not always breed specific. Hatchery birds tend to lay sooner and lay more eggs, so they have benefits.

Tell me about BLRW!

I had ordered 5 mixed "rare breeds" from Meyer this summer, but a coon got in our garage and killed them all. DH is feeling guilty about it so told me I could order 5 "pet" chickens for this spring. I already have an EE, 3 RIR, 2 barred rocks, and 2 white rocks, the poorest layers will probably become dinner at the end of summer to make room for the new babies. (I say some, but we all know how chicken math works.) So... since these are to be babies pets and not really production birds necessarily I picked 5 pretty ones (plus a "meal maker", LOL). One of the ones I am getting is a BLRW, so want to know all about them prior to (and it's like 6 long months before they arrive, so...)
I was impatient for pretty chicks this summer (and needed something to distract me after dogs took out all but one of my from-a-breeder BLRW) and ordered 10 BLRW from Meyer, so I can give you a bit of commentary on those! Out of the 10 (9 pullets and 1 cockerel) only one was blue. All of the rest were splash laced. Lacing is all over the place and isn't what a "proper" dotte should have, but they are still VERY lovely additions to my backyard flock. They are definitely on the orange side of red, which is to say not really red at all, but with the contrast with white lacing I don't mind much. I don't socialize my chicks like some do, and they were extremely flighty for the first 10 weeks, but have now started coming up to me when I go out to fill feeders or take treats. They are around the same size as the 1 pullet that survived the dog attack, so they aren't severely undersized or anything like that. I did have 4 of them with straight combs (not rose combs) if that is of concern to you.

My BLRW from Meyer haven't started laying yet, but I'm hoping they will in the next month or so. My OTHER hatchery-quality dottes give me around 4 eggs per week, for whatever that's worth. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you're after a little backyard-eye-candy.

This is my only BLRW (splash) I need more! Donna, please ask your girls to start laying again! She is 8 weeks, how is she looking so far?

I also got some hatchery chicks from a local hatchery. I really wanted the beautiful dark blue and red. Of the many straight run that I got, only one really looked blue. They were all mostly orangey. Then there was also the cockerel problem. I sold all of the hatchery birds and have gotten some from breeders. The new ones are soooo beautiful!

Do you have any pics?

I'm not so worried about eggs - I have some production birds for that. These will mostly be the "eye candy" LOL. I actually like the lighter blue to the really dark ones myself. The plan is to super socialize these as they will be more pets - the production birds I did not socialize as much so they are flighty, but I didn't want to get attached because they are likely to end up as dinner at some point. My first batch I was so attached to, one ended up being a roo and two got killed by a coon (the same one that got my tiny babies) and I was just devastated.

I would be sooo happy just to get, well. Any! I plan on putting in a larger order late spring or early summer, as soon as they are laying consistently. I thing my splash girl is adorable but I really really want some blues! Please ladies, lay, lay, lay!
