Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

Hi there--

These birds are not mine but I was thinking about purchasing one or both as pets because I have always thought Wyandotte (particularly BLR) are gorgeous. Obviously, I am not looking to show or anything, and I realize that they are not at all show quality. They are listed as blue silver laced reds? I am a newbie, of course, but is that a real type or just inaccurate naming of the birds? What color are they?

< I think I will only get this one? I am such a newbie...is this a blue laced red or a splash? I know I've read splash is lighter than blue but what... really...is light? I see some that have almost white lacing, so in that case the difference is obvious to even me. But then I see some called blue that look like this hen but others that look like her called splash? Then I read something about hackle feather color (one is gold and other is blue?)... and that confused me further. (When I say they "look" the same, this is from my untrained eye! Might not look the same to someone who knows what the heck they are looking at! Ha ha)

Is this one a splash with very poor lacing?

Trying to educate myself a Little! Thanks!

The first one is splash, and the red color, see how it is sort of mahogany (dark reddish brown), not orange/copper/gold like the 2nd one? That mahogany is the color you want, the 2nd bird looks like a cross, poor lacing and wrong red color. (Disclaimer: I am a novice with Wynadottes)

If the person is selling the 2nd bird as BLRW too, I would be cautious buying any of their birds...

Thank you for the reply! I appreciate you pointing out the red color to me... helps a lot. I think the person selling them is just a clueless newbie like myself. She got them as chicks from someone else who hatched them earlier this year.

sure thing! here are some photos for reference -

Edit: more!
Blue variation: http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/CGP/Wyand/BeautyAltered.JPEG the red is coppery on this one
Blue variation, a little darker: http://silknfeather.weebly.com/uploads/3/9/9/2/3992982/1332745537.jpg copper around the neck (should be mahogany)

Thanks for sharing the links. Very nice references. I'm new to wyandottes and been wanting the blrw for awhile now. I originally wanted LF. But ended up coming across a breeder with bantams. I have some bantam blr eggs in the incubator now and hope they hatch. And hoping they will have nice color on them

The breeder I bought them from has nice birds from the pictures I've seen. I really love the splash. The mahogany against the lacing is so unique.

For those of you that have the blr bantams, how are you breeding in that good, rich red color? It seems the bantam aren't as far advanced as the LF in color.
Thanks.

I'm trying to find richer deeper red birds to use with them... I do have one possible alternative as well, but that involves outcrossing to a partridge bantam cochin. I had one cockerel from last fall, from an oops breeding that had decent coloration, so I may try that again this year. the partridge cochins aren't great type for cochins, but they do resemble the 'dottes more, except for the feathered feet.

ok I think you got that backwards...

blrw is just what it sounds like... blue lacing (outline) on a red feather. a rlbw would be red lacing on a blue feather, and I don't think such a thing exists... there is no mutation to bring the melanizing to the center of the feather, the Columbian mutation used in laced birds pushes it to the outer edge...

the easy difference between blue and splash, blue is an even color all over (wherever there is blue pigment) while splash is just that. it's a pale blue/white with darker blue/black splashes (streaks or spots) here and there where the blue would normally be.

and that last girl has nice deep red coloration, but breeding for type, I would avoid because she has 'split breast' the crease down the center line in front... and being that she looks like she's nearing point of lay (or already is laying) I doubt she would outgrow that...

from the evenness of the coloration, I might suggest the top bird is also a blue laced red (not splash) and for color, she's very nice. depending on her age, she may fill out in type as she matures, but if you just want pretty layers, she definitely would qualify. 8)

Thank you for the reply! I just received another photo of her... she looks lighter in this one (although color still looks even?) I was told she was born in March.
