Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

My blrw have done well here in Texas. We have some pretty hot summers. I have a huge tree in the backyard that shades most of the yard. And of course they have plenty of water. My flock last year was of about 50 birds, bout now its 12 adults and 11 chicks. I have 5 one gallon waterers and 6 quart waterers all around the yard. The coolest part of the yard is where they bathe.

Question: I'm about to hatch some BLRW, along with some other 'dottes, and I want to put some in the start of my breeding program and others will be my layers. How early can you tell if a chick/pullet/cockrel will make a good bird for breeding? When can you really start to tell the birds with the better features than the others?

Thanks!

From my understanding of all larger breeds, you really have a hard time seeing who will be 'good' until six to eight months. Runs true with my Aussies. A good bird at four months can be a bad bird at 'maturity: although IMHO maturity in thebaussies isn't until closer to a year.

I ordered a blue laced red wyandotte male from Meyer Hatchery and have been disaponted that He seems to have poped out with a strait comb. but as i was looking at all my new chicks i started thinking that he might be a she! so i thought i would post some pictures here and see what you all think. right now I'm hoping pullet, if its a rooster i wont use him for breeding so i guess i will have him for dinner. He/She is 8 weeks old tomorrow.

Pullet or Rooster?
