Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

Also, my splash and blr hen I bought together and were told they were 2yrs...they were molting when I got them and figured with stress from the move they might not lay eggs rt away....I have had them for 3 weeks now in which my blr started laying a week ago but my splash isn't. Does anyone think she is too old, maybe just has stopped laying?? How long should I give her? Hate to give her away since my blr hen are friends.

they can lay for something like 7-10 years, definitely give her more time coming off a molt. also moving to a new home can cause stress that can cause them to stop laying for a period, since it's been 3 weeks already I bet it will be soon :) her comb is quite red.

I agree that the 3rd BLR you have is a cockerel, looks like a dark blue to me?

blue x blue is the ideal breeding, but if you had a black cockerel you could breed splash x black and get 100% blues

black and splash are by-products of blue x blue breeding and are considered culls or extras - Blue is the only color accepted. Personally I think splash laced red is a beautiful lawn ornament, I love that color combination :)

Thank you so much for the info!

I meant to ask you about how red her comb is...I noticed it to....Is it normal, good/bad or nothing to it?

This might be a little better pic of the one that was in question

can you take a photo over it's back with the flash on or in good light? trying to look for shiny feathers on the wings, neck, and back

EDIT: actually in this photo you can see it pretty well,

the feathers on his wing look shiny, going with cockerel 100%!

can't see any shiny feathers on his saddle, but they look pointed (triangle shaped) and laying down over the tail. not to mention the comb and wattles are very large for a 4 month old not laying

it's normal, and good. when a hen's comb is red, it usually means she's laying eggs or very close to laying eggs.

when a hen gets stick, or stops laying for some reason (molt, broody) her comb will be more of a pale pink than bright red. you can watch her comb for an indicator of health!

I don't see any shiny hackle or saddle feathers, yet. I still think its a male though from the comb and wattles.

if you can catch him, you can look for the shiny feathers by separating the feathers on his back. imagine a 2 inch wide piece of cloth down his back, on either side of that, is where the feathers start growing. almost under the wing. the shiny feathers that grow there look very different from the regular feathers, you will know when you see one. the tips are also triangle shaped, instead of rounded. hens have rounded feathers and cockerels have triangle shaped feathers on their backs. you can compare feather shape on the most recent pics you took, of the splash girl next to him - very rounded feathers
