Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

it is a peat moss replacement call coir or coco fiber made from coconuts! I buy a block of it and it is very small and compressed, but if you put it in water it expands and covers their run :) I like it because it stays soft and loose for dirt baths, whereas the dirt in the run gets very hard/compacted after a little while..

Thanks!
could you possibly tell me the measurements of your coop, and how many fill it?

Farmer Viola, Your rooster is beautiful!!!!!!!I wish he was here and visiting my BLRW hen.

I cannot wait to set eggs from his hens

Thanks!

the whole thing is 16x24 and we used 10 blocks total, but it is separated out into 4 sections of different sizes.. I think the smallest sections is 4x12 and it took 2 blocks. there is a garden store here that sells the blocks for $4 each

Hmmm.... maybe the blocks are a different size thw
an the ones on the Amazon link. Those are $31. Do you use it in the coop also? Or just the run?
Thanks so much for the info :)

Love the birds too btw ;)

aw thanks!

I think amazon is just expensive, that is what the blocks look like that I buy but at this garden store, but they are a lot cheaper than the internet..

the coop is a barn with hardware cloth enclosure and a door leading to an outdoor freerange area. part of it is open-air (hardware cloth) so it could be considered a run/coop combination I guess.

half the 16x24 area is open to go outside to freerange (8x24) - egglayer flock

the other half is all enclosed with HW cloth but they can't go outside - chick pen and turkey pen (4x12 each) and wyandotte breeding pen (coop & run combo) is 8x12

clear as mud? lol
I will see if I have any photos of the coop/run that show it better

Sounds like you have a greay setup :)
our breeder pens are in the barn. And each group has to take turns being walked out to the one fenced area. I feel bad for them being cooped up so much. When not in breeding season they arr in the milk house at night and free range the 3 1/2 acres in the day.
We have a big old barn. And I would like to find a way to have indoor/outdoor breeder pens :)

Me too! I just moved the BLRW into their pen recently, about 2 weeks ago. Until then they were free ranging with the egg laying flock. I feel bad for them now locked up too. The hens pace the fence and want to go out the door they can see to the grass area. :(

Your setup sounds nice as well! I like having them free ranged too. It is not truly free ranged here because we have 10 acres but they have a fenced off portion about 4 acres I think. almost free range...

But the BLRW breeder rooster Karl was 2nd in command while in the big flock, even though he is massive, way larger in size than the king rooster. So now he is starting to come into his own more, he shows the girls where to lay their eggs in their new coop division, and gives them food, dances, gets to mate without getting kicked, etc. Before, the king rooster would bully him if he tried to be a leader. Hilarious because the other guy is way smaller!

The breeding season will just be for a little while, they won't be locked in forever... but for now they have a 8x12 coop/run area for 4 chickens which I think is a good amount of space. I bring them green vegetables and I think that helps :)

That sounds like a very goos space!
Our BLRW roos are the same way :) big guys that could rule the roost. Bit are just so docile and sweet.
We have a mixed roo who leads the pack here. He is good with us and his hens. But diligently keeps any cockerals in line. I never have to worry with Rae around. He is a good protector of his girls and the chicks we free range.

Hope it is ok! Nhe is not BLRW but can't help but share :)
