Karen I think too a lot of people don't want to SHARE and that contributes to the problem. I saw a post the other day and someone didn't want to SHARE her soap recipe.... it too her YEARS to get it right so she is not sharing..... why would you make someone got through what you did by not sharing. Same mentality with chickens. " I have worked hard on my chickens and I am not telling you how I did it."

I just got these little nuggets from a local breeder they are supposed to be BLR bantams. I think they are pretty and will be fun for my mixed breed flock!

I definitely appreciate the wisdom so freely shared on this thread. Wish I had some to offer but that will come in time, with experience hopefully.

Need to post photos of the two chicks I posted about a few weeks back. One is now definitely black, one is blue. One has comb development and the beginnings of wattles and the other has wattles coming in but no comb.. lol My guess at this point is that they're both cockerels but figured I'd wait a little longer to ask again. It's so hard to tell!

At what age can I reasonably expect to see wattles developing in a pullet?

well, on a side note, i've got my blrw trio FINALLY penned, even tho it's a bit small for them, really... but both girls are laying, so i should be able to start incubating in another week or so... then we'll see what we're getting.

i was pretty sure they were laying as of about a month ago. i started getting darker eggs than i had been from the orps and dorkings. so cross fingers the roo knows his job.

and in the mean time i'll be building my new pens, now that the weather's improving.

One of my first eggs from my Splash LRW pullet was dark enough to rival one of my Marans. It was a small odd shaped eggs.... but was impressive on the color. She does not lay that dark normally now.

I agree, thanks for the informative response! I'm definitely in the research phase as far as breeding goes.

I've ordered a small batch of hatchery GLWs for eggs and freezer birds, but looking into the state of the breed has me really interested in obtaining some quality genetics and starting a breeding program in the next few years. My last project was getting into heirloom veggies and seed saving, and now I'm moving on to heirloom chickens, ha. I agree with you about the concept of "spoiling" the parents with indiscriminate breeding - the dog breeders you were talking about appear to have a loose grasp on genetics.

This is starting to seem like the black copper maran forum. Blrw is a cross until its been around for long enough to truly breed true.
