I normally do not say much as I'm more of an observer and I don't want to get someone's panties in a knot but......
Im having a hard time understanding why people are breeding BLRW that don't meet the standard of what their supposed to be!! Your not a breeder if your not following the standard! BLRW are not supposed to be orange, gold... yes they are supposed to be laced lol... oh and look like Wyandottes... etc!

Obviously a breeder has to do something with their culls.. Being honest and selling them strickly as layers and being specific that they should not be bred due to there lack of specific qualities of the breed... OK. Tell me if I'm wrong but if a good breeder is producing something that's orange/gold, no lacing, single combs and lacks the wyandotte type it shouldn't happen for long cause thier going to cull out the producers of those genetics....


Pebcrb I feel badly that you paid $15 for a pet cockerel but also that you paid $15 for such young pet quality blrw... Maybe I should raise my rates for laying hens ****!!!

Buyers don't be afraid to ask to see pics of the parent birds or the birds themselves... Some places are bio secure so you may not be able to see them in flesh but look at what your getting... Educate urself also. Layer or not you still want to buy from a person of good integrity.

Wyatt, our 15 week old Blue Laced Red Wyandotte cockerel extraordinaire! He comes and squats submissively by me, awkwardly runs toward me in delight (he is HUGE and the largest of all our flock)... I mean HUGE!!!
He'll give me a peck when I'm not ex pecting it. I guess he wants to keep me on my toes. He's fabulous with the girls and always quietly observing on the fringe of the flock - not a huge leader or protector. He WILL answer any challenge that Manny or any of the other cockerels try to deliver - and he always wins. (Unlike Manny, he's still working on his crow. Manny has it down.. stone cold.) [COLOR=37404E]Wyatt is the best looking of our McMurray straight run chicks. I hope to keep him and see if I can start working toward a standard. What do you folks think? Is he a good candidate? From what I've read it seems he is close to the body shape but has alot of growing to do. They recommend going for the biger birds to get that massive Wyandotte size. The coloring though isn't what they want the standard to have. I also have Mcmurray chicks and the consensus on the coloring is that they are too orange/copper. The others suggested starting with more of the deep red for a breeding program. He sure sounds like a wonderful rooster to have around!

We live in Oklahoma, and the summer weather is starting to get very hot and humid. We have 3 chicks around 8 weeks old in our coop outside. How are they in hot weather? Should we be doing anything particular to keep them cool? One was walking around yesterday with his mouth open and breathing, so i put a pan of cold water in the coop but he never went in it. We don't want any of them to get overheated, please help us........

I am sure its my fault for being to nice, and not asking a lot of questions. I only have a hand full of pullets (at least that is the plan,just started with chickens) for pets and eggs. I know they are the wrong color but I love orange and as I am not breeding I just got eye candy lol I spent $15 for them and drove over an hour to meet the people at a busy intersection and that is why I wasn't able to get a good look at them or I wouldn't if bought the cockerel and the Womens behavior had me worried but I was alone with my kids and didn't want to be there long so I grabbed them and left. The only started pullets around here are and hour and a half north or south and $15 was the cheapest, I got my black blrw as a week old chick at a place closer but I wanted pullets and no one seems to have any thanks for the advise and fool me once shame one you, fool me twice shame one me! I will be more pushy in the future! I figure if they needed to lie to get money they need it more than I do

For comparison -
In California $15 is a pretty typical price for a straight run chick from a breeder, whether it is BLRW or other. That price doesn't seem to change much for the first month and it's actually difficult to find started stock.

If I can help educate them than I'm doing my part as a breeder and in time your doing the breed better as that person your helping to educate will follow in those standards.

Thanks! I emailed her and she said she got them from a feed store as pullets and that may be the issue but she has other chickens for sale so she must have some idea on sexing right?

All breeds are different, I could tell my Blrw's at around 3-4 weeks, but if she was acting "Sketchy" She probably knew.
Why do people have to make things so hard? The lady I got my chicks from was a pain to deal with. At least I received beautiful birds though. I plan on breeding them if they pass all of your standards ('your' meaning the local forum experts), and if they come close to the standard that are supposed to be. What I can tell you about the future is, I will be easy to find, easy to talk to, easy to Buy from, and friendly! I won't be one of those cautionary tales I keep hearing about!
