HSCMorgans - I started with Orpingtons but have found the Wyandottes to be calmer & LOVE the variety in colors. They'll be 18wks this coming Sunday, waiting for those eggs. Should I feed layer at 18wks or wait until they start laying? Thanks again...
I have done it both ways really and can't really say it makes a huge difference. I have kept birds on grower till I start finding eggs and tried changing to layer at a recommended age on the bag. I think each hen has it in their own agenda when their going to start laying.. some can be stubborn about it lol. I also have Brahmas which take longer to begin laying.
I find myself trying to keep things simple and often will keep them on a grower feed until I see eggs from one or two pullets and then use a layer formulated for young layers... (as long as all the birds in the coop are relatively the same age). Its always very exciting to find your first egg.... rewarding for sure!!
