Comb and wattle development is the key to sexing for me. Here is a picture of a couple of my chicks at around the same age as yours. Note the pink, wider comb and wattles on the chick in picture #1. This is a rooster. Then notice in picture #2 the lack of wattles and color in the pullets comb. Hope this helps

The other day i got 5 chicks, (all 4 weeks old) 3 BLRW and 2 crosses i think of white sexlink and maran...? Im pretty sure one of the crosses is a roo, just because of its size in ratio to the others... but im not sure. im bad at guessing sexes as far as chicks go. here are some pic's and i will try to number them. Thank you in advance for any input i sure do appreciate it guys and gals.

I thought yours were older than that. Sorry to have worried you

The chicks in my pictures are around 8 weeks. 4 weeks is way to young to tell the sex. Now you know what to look for though

This is my new BLRW pullet from dare2dream farms. I believe she is at 10 weeks right now. I could only get 2 more chickens to add to my 3 since we live in the suburbs, so I chose an EE and BLRW my favorite chicken looks-wise. I just wanted variety and don't care about showing or breeding, though I would be interested in improving the breed of the BLRW when I finish Aggie school and get my own farm. Anywho here is my sweet little girl with me mum. Meet Fawks.

My chicks are about 6 weeks now. I was supposed to have 3 hens and a rooster. Two have wide combs, one has a smaller comb and the last has almost no comb at all. Three of them have tail feathers and one (with a wide comb) has almost nothing for tail feathers.

I guess I need to wait longer.

How old before the BLRWs start laying regularly? I went to great lengths to get some nice birds from hatching eggs. I have 10 hens and 2 roos from 3 different egg batches that hatched out on 2/20/11, 3/31/11, and 4/7/11. I have been very disappointed in the number of eggs I'm getting from these. I get at most 2/day, and frequently none. The barred rocks and Delawares, on the other hand, are almost all laying. I know these are bred for good egg production and the BLRWs are not, but come on----with the price of organic feed, these need to be a little bit more productive.

I won't even have enough fresh eggs to sell as hatching eggs if they don't pick up. How patient do I need to be?? These and my black copper marans are the worst layers of 8 different heritage breeds I have.

We have SLW and they lay pretty well. They did take a 2 week or so hyatus as it was well over 100 with the heat index, plus they were molting. They are back to laying 4 a day (usually get 5 or 6) out of 6 hens. They are 2 years old. Just give them a little more time.

I have an order in for some young adult BLRW in a month or so. I can't wait! They are sooo pretty!
