Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

ok sorry about the wait. it finally stopped raining and dried out a bit. forgive the background of the pic, my horse trailer has seen better days/years/decades. trailer circa 1974 - there's a little metal still left, but not much.

I think I like him..... he is dark, has some feather shafting though, but most birds do. How is his comb? You may have some culling to do, but I think you might get a pretty good start.

yeah there is feather shafting even tho he's pretty dark (the pic was in the dead of night and the flash reflected some here and there, those aren't white bits).

his comb is ok i think, but being 'new guy' he's been sparring with all the roos and a few hens thru the cage wire, so it's a bit beaten up right now but shape overall is good.

his type is pretty good too i think. tho i'm coming from a cochin background so i like bigger cushions than the wyandotte seems to keep.

Just sharing a few photos of some of my flock. I haven't posted any of them before...just got into this breed last summer. I have a pretty little pullet that is growing out right now that is a lovely dark mahogany with almost no shafting...hope she turns out nice! I would take some more current pics if they weren't looking raggedy and molting. All the pics of my roo have the sun making him look more copper than he really is...he is very dark. Comments welcome!

Love em :D but since I got my 1st Dottes this year I'm still learning too :caf

Wow, what an informative thread with tons of info. I have been trying to read through a bunch and have learned a lot. I got my first BLRW's from a poultry swap last year. I though they were gorgeous and the breeder seemed to have some really nice birds (although I was just looking for attractive layers at the time and not breeding). I ended up with 2 hens and 2 roos, got rid of one of the roos so now just have the trio. I recently hatched some of their eggs and although I thought they were all splash, I definitely have an assortment of chicks so I think one of my hens is a light blue and not splash.

So now I am thinking about getting a little more serious about breeding them and after reading this thread, have looked more closely at my birds. None of them have the bright yellow legs, they are more pinkish. Also my rooster has lighter colored saddle feathers and hackles than is desired. I had planned to keep all the chicks to see how they turn out but I am wondering now if I should just start over with nicer breeding stock or keep the best of the chicks and breed up. What do you all think?

I don't know what color they are.... anybody can offer ideas

This one is still gooey but is VERY Dark, but I don't think I would call it black.....

My first thought with this one was it is blue, but not sure.

This is the hen I am thinking is light blue...not splash. The other hen is going through a molt right now so I didn't get any pics but I am pretty sure she is splash.

Splash rooster, looking a little rough as he and the turkeys have been getting into spats lately.

I don't have any pics of the chicks yet. They range from 1 week to 2 1/2 weeks. I will try and get some soon though!
