yeah there is feather shafting even tho he's pretty dark (the pic was in the dead of night and the flash reflected some here and there, those aren't white bits).I think I like him..... he is dark, has some feather shafting though, but most birds do. How is his comb? You may have some culling to do, but I think you might get a pretty good start.![]()
Just sharing a few photos of some of my flock. I haven't posted any of them before...just got into this breed last summer. I have a pretty little pullet that is growing out right now that is a lovely dark mahogany with almost no shafting...hope she turns out nice! I would take some more current pics if they weren't looking raggedy and molting. All the pics of my roo have the sun making him look more copper than he really is...he is very dark. Comments welcome!

We will need picsWow, what an informative thread with tons of info. I have been trying to read through a bunch and have learned a lot. I got my first BLRW's from a poultry swap last year. I though they were gorgeous and the breeder seemed to have some really nice birds (although I was just looking for attractive layers at the time and not breeding). I ended up with 2 hens and 2 roos, got rid of one of the roos so now just have the trio. I recently hatched some of their eggs and although I thought they were all splash, I definitely have an assortment of chicks so I think one of my hens is a light blue and not splash.
So now I am thinking about getting a little more serious about breeding them and after reading this thread, have looked more closely at my birds. None of them have the bright yellow legs, they are more pinkish. Also my rooster has lighter colored saddle feathers and hackles than is desired. I had planned to keep all the chicks to see how they turn out but I am wondering now if I should just start over with nicer breeding stock or keep the best of the chicks and breed up. What do you all think?
