I have had chickens for 3 years, but just learned of this website. I'm located in NE Alabama on Sand Mountain. I raise Bilefelders (spelling) for eggs. I raise grass-fed sheep and cows for meat. The chicken coop is right beside my workshop so they occasionally stop by for entertainment. The feather piggies beg every time they see me. I allow them to free range; they also get scraps and leftovers. I have ten hens and four roosters. I had one rooster once, but then none until the lucky egg hatched. Not sure if a coyote or hawk got the first boy, but I keep at least 2 around at all times now. They do a good job watching out for the girls.
I'm semi-retired. My farm isn't big enough to make me work all day, but it is big enough there is always something to do. I have a workshop where I can build bee or human furniture, a welding station, and a 3D printer. I can also do 12Volt electrical work. I've got some short stories published, including one inspired by one of my roosters (coming out in 2026).
