Blue Orpington

Pics
My 3rd year with blue orps and a splash finally emerged from our hatch this spring. Absolutely beautiful markings now at just over 6 weeks old. I'm all excited and will breed her next spring in hopes of getting more.

To my knowledge as I have been told, The dominant color gene comes from the rooster primarily. If he was barred, the offspring would be barred because that color feature is dominant regardless of the hens color. Cant attest for the bue orp as it has 3 primary colors of black, silver gray and splash. One thing is for sure, you will have an Orpington strain! Great colors regardless, just go with the flow an let them mate.

I am looking into getting a few blue orphingtons to go with my already established flock of buff orphingtons.

Here are a few pics of my Buffs. I love the orphingtons, do the Blue Orphingtons have the same
disposition as the Buff Orphingtons?

It was one of those had to have experiences for myself. They were a new color like no other. Little did I know that they weren't blue. $20.00 each was the hatchery price! I wanted the splash color but color was not an option. I opted for 6 birds with a rooster in the bunch for breeding. As they grew I thought to myself that these couldn't possibly be opingtons! They were too big and the leg shanks were huge and slate blue gray. Why I thought? So I did some history on them and their breeders. Another breed was used in their creation, but to this day, it isn't mentioned. Still a secret I suppose. More money to be made I guess.
Personality - Almost the same as the buff but not as down to earth so to speak. My buffies as I call them will follow me everywhere. Not so with the blues. Don't et me wrong, they are definitely a good bird and have more weight and stealth to them. Good egg layers and more dual purpose for table fare. Decent tasting I might add. About 4 1/2 lbs. dressed out. After 3 years, I hatched my first splash! I need another roo.

alright. Seriously.  I how do I go about getting a couple of blues for my flock?  I can't find anybody that is selling these.  I'm not looking for this year, I have to expire a few tenancies in the coop first--but I want to add a couple next year.  Any good distributors?
We got our blues from reniespeeps. I would highly recommend getting them from her!

How do the blue (or lavender) Opringtons compare to hatchery Buffs in disposition? Even though everyone says they are sweet I have not like my hatchery buff Orpingtons personalities at all, but I see a few hatcheries now carry blue and lavender Orpingtons and I am wondering if they are any better...

Where did you get your buffs? I got one from Cackle hatchery. I love you buffs they are so sweet, even my roo is a nice fella.

We live between Ludington and Manistee less than 7 miles from the shore line of Lake Michigan. I wonder where west Michigan is? I have blue orpingtons, bielefelders, and Belgium malines. I have 4 Cochins arriving the end of this month. Who wanted birds in the spring?

I have a breeding question. I have two beautiful blue Orpington hens and I bred them with my lavender rooster. The chicks look much darker than my girls did when I got them at one day old. Is it possible to get a black Orpington from this pairing?
