Blue Orpingtons

I am new at raiseing blue orpingtons. They are good looking birds. My trouble is i think i am not getting what i pay for.I had 1trio splash rooster 2black hens.I hatched off a bunch chickes pretty blue chicks. When they were big enough to tell pullet from cockeral the cockeral started to show red in neck, shoulder, saddle feathers.Still pretty but not true blue orp.So i got rid off that trio and all chicks drove 200 miles bought 5 black-10splash week old chicks supose to be pure raised and hatch chicks from them the cockerals are showing red in these. Is this right or am i getting the shaft.I dont think this is right but like i said i am new to orpingtons.Would like to hear from experanced breeder. They have really great laceing i just dont wont red in them.

I have never had red feathers showing up in my blues. were both of your batches of blues fron the same breeder?

both batches of chicks were from different breeders my splash roosters have like a quater size patch of orange red spot on shoulder feathers.i dont know where to start over for 3rd time or quit.

That should not be an ongoing concern...I think you've just had bad luck! I learned from my Australorps that black chickens carry the red gene and it sometimes "leaks" or is expressed in patches. But it isn't terribly common. There are plenty of great BBS breeders who can help you out! Don't give up yet. I got some beautiful birds from Lots a Cluckin, I decided to sell out and stick with bantams because it's easier to bring small fluffy chickens in from the Southern heat than the giant fluffy chickens. But that was my only reason, they were beautiful birds.

thanks ,i cant quit i am disabled an my chickens are my outlet to staying bizzy and keeping my mind off of my pain.I would love to get some that mets my exspitations that i can afford.Do you have any contact info for lots a cluckin.

I have some bantam BBS Orps on order, don't know when I will get them but I will hang out here & look at the pictures in the meantime. :) Your birds are all gorgeous! How did the hatching go?

I should be getting my first Blue Orpington in May, along with a few other chicks to add to my little mixed flock! I'm very excited; this is my first time tending chickens, but I've heard very good things about the temperaments of Orpingtons (and I really like the colours). Can't wait to find out! :)

I am pretty sure I have a splash.... very excited, currently I have Buff, Blue and Black. My goal is to add Lavender and splash this year
