I am looking for a little feedback on a chicken we once called Philly - as in Phyllis Diller. We bought it from a local feed store in early June and when we re-homed some Roo's in early August we were pretty sure she was a pullet.

Fast forward to last weekend when we heard a cock-a-doodle-dooo coming from the hen house. In the past two weeks we fear Philly now needs to be called Phil

The picture on the left is Philly at 10 -11 weeks
The picture on the right is Phil at 22 weeks

Is it common for a Roo to mature this late?

Phil is the most docile and wimpy bird in our group of 9 and is still very friendly. Just a bit on the noisy side.

He's not late maturing, you just missed the early signs of his being male. In his 10-11 week picture, you can see his 'wild crest, his big red wattles, his dark shade of blue on the shoulders, and even some male hackles and saddle feathers.
Denial can be a very powerful thing and can 'blind' you when you want a particular bird to be female.
