My pet coturnix quail stopped laying at September, went under molting, then layed this strange egg! It is kind of unbalanced(too small, too thin and lopsided) and blue smeared in large spots. She used to lay normal coturnix eggs.

Now, my quail is almost 2 years old and layed quite non-stop to the point that she had variety of health issues including prolapse, so I was glad she stopped laying for a feww months but now she's back with this strange egg. Should I limit her daylight hours so she would go back to winter rest cycle? Will it force her to molt again and cause stress? I can't care less about her rgg production, I only want her to stay healthy and this looks really, really bad.

If you aren't already adding extra light... then the bird has completed its' rest and is coming back into production. While it is mostly light related.. other things have definite impact, like nutrition. Birds with plenty of nutrients on board return to lay sooner than those that are lacking in something.

I agree with the first poster in that it looks like a new layer hiccup from a bird just maturing or coming back on line.

Prolapse is often caused by an egg being too big more so than laying too many. It can be impacted by being overweight and such also.

Hopefully this season laying will go over better than the last and she can be your pet for a long time to come! :fl

A few months ago she almost died from (suspected) calcium deficiency and bacterial infection. It seems providing them with ground oyster shells is not enough....anyway I added big extra nutritions on her diet ever since such as vitamines, minerals, calcium, probiotics, proteins so her getting back into the egg cycle is probably because of this. As for the light, I put her in a dark room in the evening and let her out just before afternoon so it's about 10 light hours a day? I thought it was enough to simulate 'winter rest', but here we go again...:hit
