Anyone willing to help me learn about blue vs. self blue in the brahma breed?

Wondering if this chick is just a blue shade variant or potentially self blue? Tips on identifying the difference?

Disregarding this bird's faults, what color would you say?

Its hard to tell with the feather type, but that one looks like it is possibly porcelain. Is it the father of the chick above? If you cross a self blue and a blue/splash, the blue will "hide" any lavender, from what I understand, which is why it is advised to keep blues and lavenders separate if you are doing an actual breeding program. You could completely screw up someone else's breeding program by selling them a blue that is carrying lavender.

Qualifying statement - I just have a small flock of my own for fun and am learning as I go. I'm sure that is readily apparent from my post and questions ;). Thanks for the help.

I'm partly trying to determine which of my birds are split for lavender (if this is a self blue) as I hatched this roo unexpectedly from stock that I was unaware were carrying the lavender gene, so I understand your point above well! I thought self blue for the rooster based on the frayed tail as well. Several people have told me other things including that he is a light blue with gold leakage, or maybe a splash. He is definitely not a splash. He is young and I did not think he was actively breeding yet (I may not keep him around) but there is a chance this is his chick...which is why I wanted to understand the chick's color better.

It would seem I could breed him back to my black hens as a next step, excepting for his poor tail, if I wanted a project to see if the hens were split. Is that correct?
