Ok - here "she" is. "She" was hatched 2.25.09, which makes her 13 weeks. I obtained the eggs from a reputable breeder off of byc, and due to my inexperience only 1 of each breed I obtained hatched. A blue wheaten ameracauna, which is this one, a salmon fav which later died and a golden cuckoo maran, which is half the size of this beauty but doing just fine. My question is, if he/she came from a pen of exhibition blue/blue wheaten ameracaunas -- what the heck is this??? There is the strange coloring and no muffs, but I KNOW she/he came from a beautiful blue egg.

I am very unbelieving that this is a girl and "laying" at 13 weeks but low and behold, she stepped out of the nest box and a very tiny blue green egg was there. I am able to keep track because I only have 4 hens that are laying, and I am getting 5 different colored and large sized eggs a day except for one for the past week now. Her face is VERY red, but my EE's took about 16 weeks to lay. She has been caught nesting and in all probability has laid 4 very small greenish eggs.

OK, long story short - questions.

Is this an ameracauna and what color? Or did some crazy stuff show up from a reputable byc breeder?

Hen and laying at 13 weeks?

What should I do?

Thank you - I am too!!!! I am hoping that the breeder will see this post and tell me if she has had this happen before. I am almost wondering if a salmon slipped into the woodstack one night ... he he!!! But there are not extra toes or what not!!!!

Hi,

That is definitely not a Wheaten or Blue Wheaten Ameraucana pullet. It is closest to a Wheaten Cockerel. I can't see the comb well enough to be sure although the absence of muff, the extra read in the cheek area and the excess black in the hackles lead me to believe this may be an EE.

You said you "obtained the eggs from a reputable breeder off of byc" but are they also listed on the ABC website as an Ameraucana Breeder?

I have Wheatens and Blue Wheatens. You can see pics of my birds and their eggs on my website.

God Bless,

"She" just started reddening about 2 weeks ago, and I have seen my EE roo "breed" her. I originally thought that this was a roo but this one runs with the head roo and roosts with him. This chick was born completely white and yes, the breeder is a reputable one here with byc and her birds are gorgeous. I do believe that she is listed with the association also, and has been extraordinarily kind to me and others. I have not hatched many eggs and know exactly where this bird came from.

I am disappointed as I paid big bucks for the eggs. They are advertised as wheaten/blue wheatens. So you are thinking this is a roo? Any advice and suggestions are welcome. I do not pretend to know all!!

On the chest there is a band of white that is about as wide as three fingers that runs down from the neck to the tail. This is a very unusual looking bird. I will try to find some pics of when he/she was a baby.

I also acquired blue/black am's from another breeder and they turned out just as expected! I dunno ... ugh.

It looks like a wheaten cockerel to me. At the moment it looks like a poor specimen, but it may just be going through an ugly phase.

Some birds get their color in at different times, it depends on who's line it is.

It appears to be beardless and muffless, which can sometimes happen.

It is definately not a pullet, it is a cockerel.

ETA: Pic of a young wheaten cockerel from my lines. And to add, they all don't turn out show quality....

You have very pretty birds - I am just going to have to assume that I have a wheaten cockeral and that his muff just isn't in! But the comb and face are very red, as you can see in the pics. And as for my mystery egg layer, I am just going to assume that this one was in the box just to take a nap ??? Maybe I just have stupid birds!!!!

As for a poor specimen - I do not like the body structure of this bird at all. Very narrow through the body. My other birds are nice big fat round things. The feathers are shiny and he's healthy, and I am assuming that you can tell there are no muffs. This bird looks NOTHING like my purebreds from Whitmore farms. That's why I questioned .... and also the excess red in the face? I guess that is just healthy eating? LOL

I do sincerely appreciate everyone's help!
