Bob Blosl's Heritage Large Fowl Thread

In doing some "historical reading" it is my understanding that EB Thompson and his line of "Ringlets" were created as a outcross of EB's barred line to a line of White Leghorns from Dr Dan Young. Inadvertently, the white leghorns carried the columbian gene and that is what allowed the Ringlet line to go from being (at best) "strong cuckoo" in barring pattern to the straightly barred line that EB Thompson was ultimately famous for

I don't think any bird can be called truly pure as they are all a result of some "crossing/hybridization" of the jungle fowl and others many, many centuries ago; some as recently as crosses made in the late 1800s/early 1900s
I believe you are 100 % correct , and after an out-cross and years of line breeding , you have should have a pure line that breeds true. Sports alway pop up , problem with some is they may believe some production birds (hatchery strains) are pure , True master breeders are people recognized by the APA for their success in exhibiting a breed (and winning) no one really knows all their secrets . often the case even if you purchase birds from them after a few years your flock is no longer maintaining the winning traits. 30 years ago a friend of mine obtained some rose comb white leghorns from a master breeder in PA. both of the people I am talking about have since past. I currently have that line. At a glance you can tell they are exhibition quality , but years of flock breeding have deteriorated in size and vigor. hypothetically what do you do? well to get the quality that I wanted I took a modern show quality single comb white leghorn male and did an out cross of the line. first generation had about 50% single comb / rose comb. the rose combs had blades instead of spikes and the single combs had too many points. Size of the birds doubled. then I took the best rc male and put him back over the pure line hens. it has been 4 years now and this generation I may have achieved my goal . I still get single comb birds , but I am also getting spikes back on the combs. this is an example of a mild out-cross as I used same breed different variety to achieve my goal . I have a rose comb white leghorn with equal or greater size than most single combed birds with better type than the original line

Since most reading this thread are not members of the APA let me throw this out. The APA has Master Exhibitor and Master Breeder. A Master Exhibitor can achieve that designation without knowing a lot about breeding. Some folks buy the birds they show. A Master Breeder is someone who has excelled in shows with one breed and is more than likely a breeder.

When a person checks winning stats in the ABA or APA, it is pretty easy to see who the real breeders are. Both clubs give a free yearbook with that info when someone becomes a member.

A few birds from the Shawnee Expo show this weekend in Oklahoma:

Buckeye owned and shown by Don Gibson, a long time poultry breeder and exhibitor.
This bird won in the category BV and BB as well as 1st and Don had four cockerels of his own on exhibitors row and there was another exhibitor with several birds.
Several pictures of the same rooster because he was really active.

A Barred Rock rooster The only Barred that I saw. He was a big guy.

New Hampshire Red - don't know the exhibitor...
Bird won RV BB Two pictures of the same roo.

Delaware - same exhibitor. Not near as outstanding as Kathy's....The rooster never had his tail above the level pictured.
Seems if you have the only bird in the category, you get 1st, BV and BB status. These birds were very alert and a very clean white.

There were three white Wyandottes. Again same placing as the Delaware with no competition

I was looking for a connection to Black Wyandotte to add an outside bloodline line to my Birchen Wyandotte project. There was one SLW and one BLRW in the Junior Division. When asked whyt there were no other varieties, the judges said that showing Wyandottes is sporadic at best.

Took some pictures in my Barred Rock pen today. They are around 20 weeks.

Nice to see some nice colored barred Rocks. The last picture look at the extension of her breast to give her that Gravy Bowl Look. Nice leg color for a barred rock. If her tail could only be in the next two months fully out and a nice V shape you got a real nice bird. If these are the Frank Reese old line you all are making great progress with them since we started.

I was at a show this weekend and saw some of the best large fowl I have seen in years. I even saw some very good Light Sussex one judge said a female was the best he has ever seen.

One Judge said he saw a R I Red which is the best he ever seen.

We had a New Hampshire Pullet that was half American and half German and won Champion Large Fowl over these top Reds, and by the way Orpingtons that where so very tight feathered I thought I was back in the 1960s looking at Orpingtons that we had back then. That is the under car rage of fluff was tight no drooping skirts.

I had two people come up to me and ask can you help me get some Black Jersey Giants GOOD ones?

So out there on this tread we need some of these birds. I was told Mr. Vaughn has very good ones but maybe some of you got some from him and would share them with my two beginners who I am trying to help.

I thought this thread was trying to help people to get started with Rare Breeds and try to preserve the birds that we have today. So many breeds are need to be helped from extinction. Please dont get caught up in crossing breeds on these old Heritage Breeds. This is a method that takes years of breeding and cost lots of money. Heck you can do the same just by crossing strains to weed out the negative posts. This is kind of like going to a place that has rescued dogs and cats from a puppy farm that got in trouble with the law. We need to adopt and try to preserve what we have. If you have to go out and cross other breeds onto a line of Hatchery Chickens to try to bring them back to what they once was in the 1940s you are better off moving over to a breed that is in less need of skill and help.

I have some boxes made to put my white birds in to conditioned them in to try to keep them clean and white to show. Should I use sand or kitty litter Walt?

Help preserve Rare Breeds of Heritage in need. This is the year we need to double the numbers of family's, hobby farmers to take them on.

Dont forget my Jersey Giant Project. Lets do it for Goldie? bob

Aren't these quite Walt. Mr. Silkie approves of these so we will as the guy at the North Pole for some for Christmas.

These are a new CROSS Seroma Silkies?

I hate crossing breeds to make a chicken but so many want to do it. My wife says they are stupid but I guess they need to do something to make their mark. Now you can see why so many breeds where introduced to the APA standard in the 1950s and are so rare today. Very difficult to breed or they dont breed true and that is why they are very rare or not available.

Seroma Silkies what next. Then the poor breeds that need new owners to keep them going are just sitting there hoping someone will adopt them.

WOO HOO ! ! ! Thank you so much, Bill! I will treasure it!

Thought you'd like them. The blue booklet belonged to Bruce Hagan who was an ABA Judge near here. He bred only Black Rosecomb Bantams & sold me a trio in 1960 or'62-a long time ago anyway. They were the first pure bred birds I owned.

WHITE kitty litter kept my white SILKIES white as snow. Call the repair garages around you for some. Cheap as dirt, but you must have a kitty litter scoop, and screen it once, or more a day.

Just wondering, would this work on feather legged breeds as well? What type of kitty litter..I'm assuming nothing with the lovely smell in it right?
