the bottom picture shows of the 18592402 you will see some feathers of a bird I took
twenty years ago from a Mohawk male number 99. This is the correct
color you want to shoot for in a R I Red.

You asked for some pictures of Rhode Island Reds. I found a few on my photo bucket page.
It’s pretty simple if you are looking for the older version of Rhode Island Reds they are very dark in color much as the shade of a bing cherry you will see in a grocery store during certain times of the year. If you look at their under color their color is the shade of Prince Albert pipe Tobacco. If you look at their beaks about eight percent of their beaks or more are dark horn color like that of a used corn cob pipe. Their legs will also be heavy in dark horn color and the males spurs will be dark horn in color. The best ones to show you the color have a quill color that is blood red like the color you get when you cut your finger. Some lines are lighter in color or almost rustic in shade. Their tails are beetle green in color the outside but the better ones have green deep inside their main tail feather or ideally to the skin. The females because of their sex will have solid green in their tails but the end sides may have some red towards their quill entrance. The female has a green beetle green ticking about the size of three eights of a inch. Many strains females have half inch to one and a half inch black stripes. This is a fault but has been like this for fifty years. The secret to breeding Heritage Rhode Island Reds for color is to try to keep the black in the female neck to just ticking or no ticking at all. Then the other beetle green color will go to the tail and wings correctly. This is the hardest point to get out to beginners. The other secret to breeding for good color is do not cross strains. Get your start from someone who has been breeding for ten or twenty years. They have all the faults breed out of them. For beginners who are getting into this breed this year which will be many just worry about over all breed type, make sure the legs are plum dead center and just keep two good males and three good females and you will learn how to breed for color in two or three years. If you get a start it will take you about four to five years to screw up color. However, in type you can screw up real fast in your second year. Can’t tell you much about the lighter colored Production Reds I haven’t had any in about twenty years. Good layers I here? Bob Blosl Old Time Rhode Island Red Breeder and promoter of the breed and the Mohawk line of R I Reds which will be 100 years old this spring. . They are still rare. Why don’t you get some this year?

Note I can not get the links to work on this new fromat for the pictures that I wanted to post on Photobucket

I will send you to picturetrail.com my other site and you can look at the pictures on there. If you see a red chickens these are the correct color that I was trying to post. Maybe some of you who have some pictures of Heritage Rhode Island Reds can post for me.
