So I need help. 😭😭 my roommate bought 6 northern bobwhite quail from tractor supply because they said they are just like chickens and stuff. Well out of the 6 only one survived so I took it in. I love her so much but she’s so lonely. She will cry for hours sometimes and I have other animals so I can’t keep her out all the time. I posted around trying to find a friend for her and found out they are illegal to keep in my state without a permit. My roommate bought them at tractor supply in my state and they didn’t tell her this or anything so we had no idea. I can’t find another one for her and she’s so lonely and I can’t bear the idea of just releasing her into the wild or giving her to someone to hunt. Idk what to do. I just want her to be happy. If anyone has any ideas I’m on upstate New York. Thank you. And baby (that’s her name) thanks you too.

One more question, are you certain it is a bobwhite and not a coturnix? I have no idea on NY laws, but a bobwhite is considered a native species in many states, and natives often require more permits, than non native animals because of the danger to the native population if they escape and contaminate them or otherwise cause problems. If NY does not require permits for non native gamebirds like coturnix quail, that may be why the store didn’t tell her.

Check craigslist and see if anyone is selling any, also it may not require much to get the permit, you may need to just fill out a form and pay a small fee.
I tried this and someone as soon as they answered asked for my permit number that’s how I found out they were illegal lol. And yea I’m planning on trying to get it but I don’t know if any class a breeders I can buy from near me sadly
