Boiled Quail Eggs

Hey Swamp!

Glad your quail are laying! I eat the quail eggs all the time. I eat them boiled, scrambled, egg salad, and pickled with beets and just plain pickled.

I bring the water to a boil, add the eggs, then when the water comes back to a boil, I let them boil for 4 minutes. Cool them in cold water. The eggs are cooked perfect and I have found if you boil them for a long time, they can get a bit rubbery.

Enjoy your quail and enjoy your eggs!

Thanks Guys. Peeps, I've got eggs coming out of my ears, 13-14 every day! The wife is going to post them for sale @ work (gov. job so lots of potential customers). They spooked me today, I go into the coop and looked into the brooder where I am keeping a bunch of them, and over half of them were gone with the door slightly open. One big female is sitting on some egg crates right next to me quiet as a church mouse, but the rest are just MIA. I look around the coop, then look out in the run. No quail, no piles of feathers (chickens killed a couple a while back). In and out, in and out, just no quail. I finally look in the only place left, right under the brooder, in the storage area. Four quail meet me at the door with this "what the heck took you so long? IT'S DARK IN HERE!" look about them. The doors spring open an inch or so, they must have landed on the top of the doors and pushed in from the top. Crazy critters...

BTW did you get your reds? Ive still got a few if you need them.

I've also heard to bring the water to a boil, drop the eggs in, remove from heat and cover for 3-5 minutes. But they don't take long at all. I pulled some out last time I boiled them, cause the 2 or 3 were floating. I opened them to put them in the dog dish, and after less than 30 seconds in the water, the whites were already cooked

Hey Swamp -

Heehee... I know that sinking feeling when you look in the coop and none are there! Somehow one night

the latch on my larger quail coop did not get latched. There were 57 quail in there. I was making my bed the next morning and listening to the quail calls and thought 'wow, they really are loud this morning.' I looked out the window and they were ALL out of the coop!

They were all over the yard! I went outside and started picking them up. They were so used to me walking amongst them in the coop that I could just walk up to them without startling them. I caught 56 of them and later that afternoon my neighbor called and said her dog had caught one. It had one little cut on its wing from the dog, but it was fine. I was sooooooo lucky to have recovered all of them.

I did get a couple from my dear friend Marsha. Thanks so much!

Swamp. Isn't raising quail fun. We just sold our first batch to the local feed store. Actually we traded for food, but we are ahead of the game now. I have a lot of fun with the eggs too. Sunny side up eggs on those little slices of pumpernicle bread make everybody laugh. Good luck,

Doug
