- Heard from my Grandfather (im not that old

) that the best way to dispatch a rat is to leave it in the trap and pour boiling water over the head. I've never tried this myself but have been catching a lot of rats lately. Got 3 in a trap and am considering trying that. Has anyone else? The previous few i just poison then chuck out...

Trappers simply stand on their rib cage. They can't get a breath and die. Wear boots.

Boiling water is burning, gruesome and I'm sorry I read about it.

Until reading this, I had forgotten about when I caught 16 rats in two weeks. Used a Zapper trap - a little tunnel they go in and stand on an electric plate and get electrocuted and die. You pick up trap and slide dead rat into bag and set it back in place with reset button. Red light flashes when another rat traps. I was getting three a night. Had it up with bait for a week and nothing. Got discouraged, threw bait out because it attracted ants, but put the trap back on in place. A rat went right in it without bait - I guess it made a good hiding place. they were suspicious of the bait. Hawaii has huge, smart, numerous roof rats.

Anyway, one rat was so huge only half of him fit in the tunnel - and he wasn't quite dead, breathing but out of it but coming around. Anyway, I placed a 1" x 12" section of board over him (rib cage centered) and stood on the board - and he died.

The trappers I know do the standing thing with mink, marten, ermine, and others.

that electrocution board sounds great! Efficient and humane, the die quickly with no impending doom (unless they're monsters!). Cleaner than stomping, much better than poison because if the chooks find a poisoned rat/mouse and eat some of it they can get secondary poisoning from the body.

Definitely beyond cruel. Have you ever accidentally burned yourself with boiling water? Horribly painful, and death will NOT be instant at all. I even recommend pithing lobsters before tossing them in the boiling water, but that is just me.

If it is any consolation, if you store the lobsters on ice or in the bottom of the refrigerator and than add them to the water only when it is at a full rolling boil, it stuns them.

It actually sounds horrendous. I'd try the board method mentioned below. My ex-husband used to put a board over the rat and then jump on it, crushing them very quickly.

I have been electrocuted a coupla times it is very painful on the other hand drowning and asphyxiation did not hurt me depending on how large the rats are I use several means of dispatch
