Holy cow!
I just had a very brazen hawk attack my hens in the daylight around 3:30 in the afternoon.... with me standing less than 3 feet away.
Since it was finally a warmer day ( in the 40s here in Iowa), I let my girls out of their protected run, to free range in their uncovered, fenced area of the yard that is connected to covered run. They're allowed out in this area when we are home and usually outside. My husband, son and our dog were outside all day just a couple hundred feet away. We even had 3 bald eagles circling that we were watching closely and they moved on. I went down with our 3 year old daughter to give them some treats, and within 10 minutes of me being INSIDE the fencing with them, a hawk flew in and had Edith pinned within feet of me. I flung the treat container at it and scared it off. My husband ran over to help me get them in their safe enclosure. This ballsy little hawk ( I believe it was a Coopers Hawk) flew to the top of then fence and watched us. It then flew up to a nearby treeuntil we got everyone inside. Edith is okay, just shooken up.
WTH?!? I was totally caught off guard as I would never expect a hawk attack literally right in front of me. Now, I'm not sure if and when I can ever let them out in the fenced in grassy area again. There is tree coverage on one side and then out back yard on the other three sides. In 4 years of keeping chickens, this is the 1st time we had a hawk try this.
If they aren't even safe when we're outside with them, I don't know what to do. They love being able to free range in the area.

Daily occurance for me here during winter, the hawks really surprise at just how brazen they are, or what they really expect they will accomplish with dogs in the yard and people around.

The good thing is you were there so I doubt this individual or group will ever be back!

Yikes! I would keep them inside for a couple of days to a week before letting them out again. Hawks will be persistent until the food source is exhausted or gone. Thank goodness you were there to protect them!
Yes, they are not getting let out again for awhile. They won't be happy, but safe.
Crazy thing is the timing, I was out there for probably less than 10 minutes when it happened.

I have had Cooper's hawks hit my aviaries right next to me as I was feeding my pigeons. One even attacked a flock of pigeons feeding at my feet. I also had a peregrine falcon drive a pigeon into a fence by the loft. Both birds hit the fence. I ran over. Pigeon ran under the loft and falcon flew off. Within 15 minutes the falcon was back looking for the pigeon. This time of year a lot of hawks are young , hungry, migratory birds that know little of humans. Watch for it to return tomorrow.

Yes I will be watching the yard and trees very closely, and not ready to let them out again anytime soon.

I'll always keep letting mine out cause the numbers are in their favor, I can't even count the number of attempts on my flock of sumatras but I give them 200:1 odds vs any winged predator.

The hawks and falcons just aren't going to get at my breed they burn aolories hunting them for no reason and they figure it out. Were I raising Silkies I might feel diffrently.

Can you build a covered run? Necessary. Hawks are brazen, will pace on ground in front of my covered run, sit on top of it. Letting my birds out to free range doesn't happen as often as it used to.
Yes we have a large covered, predator proof run. This happened when I let them out of the covered run to free range in an uncovered fenced area of the yard.
